Surf Guitar Virtual Comp reviewed on Reverb Central

fenderboy66 - 05 Apr 2005 01:37:14

Don't know if this has been discussed yet, but the Surf Guitar 101
virtual comp has been reviewed by Phil Dirt. It's gotten 4 stars.
Chad Cote
6 string surfer.

mono_tones_1 - 05 Apr 2005 04:01:16

hey - totally cool, thanks Phil. I just had a look at it, and those are
pretty accurate reviews, i agree with most of what Phil says. and he
also did some cover artwork ;-). Nice comment about Marty 'cant listen
without grinning' ... in a very positive way. I fell from my chair
laughing first time i heard it... not from the joke, but from pleasure.
it's a very cool track, great work marty.
incidently, Phil put me up as "The Wannes Rombouts" - probably guessing
that it has some odd surf related meaning in Dutch - but that is just
my name, and there must be others.

Wow, that was unexpected! I just hope that doesn't scare anyone away
from submitting an mp3. Again, this was just supposed to be a way for
the list members to show each other their stuff and share music
amongst friends. Again, this isn't an official comp that is going to
get released by anyone, so don't be afraid to contribute something.
All skill levels will be represented, even the novice level...(as you
will see if/when I get mine done...)
Thanks though, Phil!! You might want to add a link to the page on your
review:
Please also note that Shawn Martin's song was renamed "Hurricane
Ashley" a little while back, and I think you must have just missed
Longboard Ranch and The 'Verb's entries. And as noted earlier, Wannes
Rombouts is indeed one person, although The Wannes Rombouts Project or
The Wannes Rombouts Experience has a nice ring to it.... :)

Very Cool! Congrats to all! I bet the other surf chat groups are
jealous!
When is the deadline again Brian?! You HAVE to submit something!

Well I arbitrarily chose May 6th, as that was about 3 months from when
we started. I will try to submit something if it comes out okay. How
about you?
I may also consider extending the deadline, as it's really not much
work on my part to keep adding stuff to the page. However, there is
nothing like a deadline to make me get on the stick and get something
finished. So yeah, I'll consider extending the deadline if people are
running out of time.
That is so hardcore about you actually getting a sax mouthpiece! Cool!
Maybe you should make an mp3 of that...(well maybe not)

It is/was a brilliant idea, and I heartilly support
such experiments. Even if your playing is rough,
someone might decide your writing is solid and want to
cover your song. Share the reverb!
Updates to the review are pending. I wrote it knowing
ikt was in-progress.

I would like to submit a song or 2. One question, though: If I send in a cover
of a
song without the rights to redo it, is there any legal ramifications?

thanks phil, and that is indeed a great reason to put those up -
inspire eachother.
Just today I was listening to a song I grabbed of the web and thought
I'd cover it, because it's a great song but badly recorded. happens a
lot i guess.
I'm all for a deadline and continue with 'part II'. that way we can
get artwork done as well, which is a little difficult as long as
songs are being added. another bonus is that we get to submit more
material ;-) but I'd say be all for first time submitters getting the
first chance.
The Wannes Rombouts (Hm, I could get used to that 'the')

yeah that comp twangs mightily! really loved Marty Tippens' tune....
but note this: I featured "HOMERCLES" from the LAVA RATS on the
latest edition of TWANG SHEBANG (#19) -- the show will be available
to the 'general public' within 24-48 hours I am told; show includes
2 more tracks by The Lava Rats (and an interview with Bill and
Sean); and a neat interview with Miles Corbin and other members of
THE AQUA VELVETS (and 2 great tracks from that band); and music from
10 others bands-2 songs each! great mix of music, check it out when
it's ready to go at (copy and paste):
Store_id=147&page_id=67
#18 is up and running now as the "current show" which features
interviews with, music by AQUAMARINES, BIG WAVE DAVE (MONSTER PETE &
CHIEFS), Phil Dirt's interview of me live on KFJC, and THE MERMEN
pictures also found at www.twangshebang.com always in sync with the
current show
hope ya enjoy it 'cause I had a blast experiencing it all, and then
presenting it for others to hear....

Interesting question 'cause I was planning on doing a cover also.
AFAIK IANAL, yadda yadda yadda, as long as you aren't selling it there
is no problem. Is that the general consensus?
Thanks,
BN
PS Please submit only 1 song, save the others for future volumes.

We (The AquaSonics) are sitting down this week, mics in hand, and
getting to serious work on our MP3. I hope it works out well.
If I use the sax mouthpeice for a song, I think it should be
called "Wounded Goose" or "The Suffering Duck". Sometimes it sounds
perfect, all the other times not even close. There is no middle
ground. I haven't had the guts to try it at a gig. i barely have
the guts to try it in front of the rest of the band.
