Satan's Pilgrims Travel plans - continued[OT?]

Ran Mosessco (kick_the_reverb) - 04 Apr 2005 22:48:37

Hi Folks,
I wanted to hear some advice regarding booking flights. And excuse me if
it's not directly related to surf music. Here's my dilemma:
I have a previous engagement to play on June 4th at the Casbah in San Diego.
So, as much as I'd love to see Satan's Pilgrims in their home town, it's not
gonna happen (getting booked in the Casbah on a Sat night is not something
to take lightly). So, I decide I'm gonna go crazy - take Friday the 3rd off
work, fly to Seattle, see SP play and then take a flight back to San Diego
on Sat morning. A couple of weeks ago I checked flight prices online and saw
it was about $185 which wasn't terrible, but not cheap. I hadn't booked
then, but decided to go ahead and do it in advance today. I was shocked to
see the prices jumped to around $245 just for the flight. I tried
priceline.com but the "name your price" option doesn't allow you to know you
flight times (meanning I can miss the SP gig and/or the gig I have to play
back in SD). There's also no refunds, so I had to give up that idea. I'm
going to try the travel agent tomorrow as a last resort...but since I know
some of you are planning to fly to the gigs, I wanted to ask if anyone has
knowledge of a way to get a more reasonable priced flight. Do you think I
should wait for the last moment to get a "last minute deal"?
I'm getting a little frustrated by this. I'm willing to spend money to see
one of my favorite bands, but I'm not on an unlimited budget.
Any advice?
Thanks
Ran

I'm kind of in the same position you are in, only my friend's wedding is
taking place in southern California on June 18th. Since about 2 weeks ago
ticket prices have jumped up $150 (now $300) for me and it's only going to
get worse. I've been looking around different Airlines and the .com's but
so far Alaska Air has been the cheapest which I just went ahead and
purchased directly, bypassing the .com fees. Flights are limited and that's
when school gets out for everyone so I sincerely doubt you'll have any luck
getting tickets cheaper.

Ran,
The prices you found are better than the ones I found for Portland. That
may be because I'm flying out of John Wayne. It's cheaper to fly out of
LAX, but it's a pain for all parties involved.
Hopefully someone here will know something better. I haven't booked my
flight yet either, but probably should.

Alaska has been the cheapest I've found too. I've liked flying with them
before as well.

I flew to Seattle via Alaska the weekend before last.
You want to book at least two weeks in advance for the best price.
Get your boarding pass printed from your computer at home before leaving for the
airport. The rest is a breeze, even from LAX. I had two carry-ons, my small roll
case and an open-back banjo to pluck on whilst I waited for the plane.
To the So Cal folks, 300+ bones is a lot to pay to see a surf band. I don't care
if it's Slacktone, that's purdy high. You could buy all the SP rare recordings
on Ebay for that price. You could buy a guitar for that price and learn all
their songs. And if the SP's reformation is a success, I'm guessing they will
end up down here before long. The Surfcoasters made it from Japan...Hey Ferenc,
you ol' scene-maker you....

If only the show were Satan's Pilgrims with special guests Slacktone,
The Bambi Molesters, The Nebulas, The Surf Coasters, and the Space
Cossacks but I would settle for the Madeira instead of the Cossacks.
Good thing I live in Seattle since that will never happen.

I would but since I'm still in school I have finals that same week. Had I
had a choice their would be no question, i'd have myself a nice little
summer vacation, make my way up and down the surf show curcuit, skimboard,
and enjoy the non-seattle weather.

Hey Marty,
I agree with you about the steep price, but you were joking when you
mentioned you could by the albums instead, right?
It was only after seeing surf bands live that I realized how different can
that experience be from just listening to the albums.
Living in So-Cal only makes the difference more noticeable, as now I'm able
to see a lot of the bands I only heard on recordings.
Anyway, I 'll try to see if I can pull this crazy travel plan, but it seems
the steep incerase it ticket prices would foil my plan.

don't care if it's Slacktone, that's purdy high. You could buy all the SP
rare recordings on Ebay for that price. You could buy a guitar for that
price and learn all their songs. And if the SP's reformation is a success,
I'm guessing they will end up down here before long. The Surfcoasters made
it from Japan...Hey Ferenc, you ol' scene-maker you....

Oh yes, Ran,
I am a major campaigner that live music is better. You'll actually get arguments
on that statement by some folks who complain about bad sound-systems and/or
soundmen and/or bad sounding rooms etc...but it is just impossible to get a
recording that represents the impact of a live performance. In clubs with a bad
sound setup, I like to stand right up close the the band so that the sound
system is not an issue.

Reverb on recordings is generally not as good as live (according to my
ears!).
The reason I keep going on about the new Longboard Ranch CD is because
they've done a great job of capturing that sound.

Thanks again for your very kind words, Kristena!
IMHO, one of the things that gives our recordings that "live" quality, is that
we actively resisted using most of the so-called "high-tech" improvements that
are used by many other bands. We recorded analog, miked everything live,
through Shure SM-57 mics, and our sound engineer didn't F-- with
"noise-reduction" or other magical modern sound-processing. That's why, on many
of the tracks, as the master volume decays, you can hear the 60-cycle hum of a
single-coil guitar through a vintage Fender tube amp!
