Rust on frets

Shawn Martin (drumuitar) - 04 Apr 2005 20:18:38

Hey all,
I just got in an SGV800 and it looks as though whoever had it had very
sweaty hands and hadn't changed the strings in ages (it obviously
hadn't been played for a long time). There is some very light surface
rust on the frets. Is there any easy way to remove it without
damaging the frets, or to stop it from spreading? I know nothing
about guitar maintenance so be gentle :-)

Use some super fine #0000 steel wool.

Hey Shawn, like Joe said, use some superfine steel wool, but becareful of the
fretboard, and cover your pu's with some tape.
Hope this helps.
Take care,

...and tape off the Fretboard with masking tape before you do.

I use Brasso. Apply with Q-Tip, wait a couple moments,
rub off with a paper towel. If that doesn't do it, try
the steel wool.

Thanks for the input everyone. My cable has been down for a day and a
half, so I only got the initial reply, but the steel wool worked great
(and yes, I used masking tape :-). I didn't realize how corroded the
frets were until after I started working on them. I must be blessed
with un-sweaty hands because I've never had this happen on any of my
guitars...and I'm sure I don't wipe the fretboard down as much as I should
