I posted this question over at the FDP and got no
responses so I figured I'd slap it up here and see if
anybody had any opinions. I've been wanting to get
some single coils for my Jagmaster...if I were to
route the body to accomodate Jazzmaster pickups, how
well would the pole pieces and strings line up? Are
there any other reasons this might not work? I was
actually thinking of grabbing one of the cheaper
longscale Jagmasters to do this with instead of
hacking my Vista series.

Richard: I had this very mod done on a Jagmaster 3 years ago. I decided to
have it done by a professional guitar tech, so the pickups were perfectly
centered under the strings. The polepieces lined up well enough that the guitar
was used exclusively on recordings and live gigs until last year. Any doubts
about how it sounds, look up my band under "surf rock" on soundclick.com, there
are 5 MP3 files of that very guitar being used for lead on original songs of
ours. Or go to the SurfGuitar101 website and listen to Longboard Ranch, "Mr.
Quench" on their MP3 compilation - That lead guitar is the Jagmaster with
Seymour Duncan Vintage Jazzmaster pickups in place.

I had Duncan Jazzmaster pickups installed in my 1990's Japanese
Jaguar. I like the sound much better with those. I had a guitar tech
do the work for me, I didn't trust myself routing out the pickguard
and the body. I would expect that it would be just as easy to do on a
Jagmaster.
Another option you might want to try before cutting up the guitar
would be Humbucker sized P-90s. They probably won't sound exactly like
Jazzmaster pickups but they might get you close.
Guitar Fetish on ebay sells some decent (and cheap) ones...
Vintage Vibe Guitars also sells some HB sized P-90s that are very
highly rated on Harmony-Central...
Pete does custom winds at a very reasonable price. He might be able to
make you something that sounds more Jazzmaster like than the GFS
pickups. I installed some of his Telecaster pickups for a friend
recently and they are beautifully made and sound extremely nice.
