Today's Strings and Yesterday's Frets

supertwangreverb - 04 Apr 2005 00:51:09

I've had my CIJ Jaguar for about a year now and the frets aren't in
bad shape, but they do have little divets over the first 5 frets on
the spots where the 2 plain steel strings touch.
I've read that today's stainless steel strings are REALLY rough on
the smaller vintage style frets. I used to use Pyramid flats, the
nickel strings didn't wear the frets down as much. However, the
frets wore those strings out too fast. My wound G would get divets
above every fret and eventually unwrap around the 4-5 month period.
For 20 bucks a set that got rather costly, just to replace one
string.
Now I use Gibson Brite Flats exclusively on both my CIJ and AV
Jaguars. But these strings DON'T wear out like the Pyramids did, so
I'm thinking all that stress the Pyramids took, the Gibsons are now
giving to my frets. I don't want to wear my AV out, and infact
because of this, I don't play it as much. So, anyone out there
who's used stainless flats for 10-15 years on smaller vintage style
frets, tell me what shape are your frets is?
