What about a baritone?

Elizabeth (surf_guitar_lizzy) - 01 Apr 2005 20:45:12

I'm thinking about adding a baritone to my guitar collection,
envisioning the sound possibilities in the realm of the
surfabilly/surfadelic music that I'm wanting to create. In my mind,
especially when pondering guitar driven surfabilly creations, I'm
thinking that a baritone will add quite a bit of punch, more so than
simply plugging a guitar into a bass amp.
Thoughts, or suggestions?

Last year I bought a used Jerry Jones Longhorn 6-string bass, it looks killer
and sounds
great. Plays perfectly. Recently I switched the middle and the bridge pu's, to
have the
versatile bridge/neck combo (humcancelling), the 12 below Dick Dale
middle/bridge
(humcancelling) and all the groovy single pu-sounds.
With these 6-string basses it's like this: when you put very light strings on
them you tune
them to B or maybe A. If you put heavier strings on them you go all the way down
to the E,
which all the "real" basses are tuned to. If the guitar was built to be a
baritone, it might
not have machine heads installed that would take the heavier strings, but you
could
probably retrofit them easily. I believe Jerry Jones uses Gotoh hardware, but
Kluson style.

I've got a Dano Hodad baritone with the 9 way selector switch on it,
tuned to B. It's been a great, and often used guitar in the Urban
Surf Kings. About half of the songs on our last CD featured the
baritone in the lead role (not as a back-up instrument). I love the
big, big sound and it's great to use in a live setting as a trio (as a
matter of fact, I'll be using it tonight at our gig at Club 5171,
Halifax, NS, Canada)
I'm sure the Jerry Jones is even better.
