Which Fender guitar?

Dan Bartley (bigtwangguy) - 01 Apr 2005 10:49:42

I'm seriously thinking about buying a Fender guitar. Which is better for lead?
Jaguar or Jazzmaster? Or should I just get a Strat so I have an all around
guitar for all styles? Thoughts?
Cheers
Dan

I'd say go with a Telecaster, but then I'm biased in that regard. I
probably paid more attention than I realized, when my dad would watch
his C&W shows all day on Saturdays, when I was a kid. How many C&W
songs do ya hear that have a Strat in 'em...let alone at lead. ;)

I already own a Tele, as well, but it's a Fat Tele. The extra twang
from the neck position humbucker is nice and all, and it really sings
on both pickups, but I still want the familiar neck position single
coil Tele twang. Of course the only remedy for that...buy another Tele. :P

Fat Tele...that's why I'm a Gretsch player. I stopped playing my Tele when I got
my '59 Gretsch because I realized that it twangs big time but in a big fat way.
My Tele sounds really thin compared to it. Put some 10's on the Gretsch and you
can do all the chicken pickin bending you want. I just thought that I'd like to
have an "official" surf guitar, that's why I was wondering about Jags and
Jazzmasters. Never played any of 'em before.
Cheers

For Surf? Jaguars play faster and easier than Jazzmasters and have an extra
fret. You really
need to play one to decide, however, if you like the trem bar, it is way
different from a
Strat or Bigsby-type. Keep in mind, the shorter scale may or may not be to your
liking, too.
The American Vintage Reissue (often referred to here as "AVRI") Jags have the
classic "surf"
sound; Jazzmasters were usually the rhythm guitar of choice in the original surf
lineups
and are tonally more mellow and quite distinct from the Jags.
Strats, on the other hand, were the choice of Dick Dale and the Shadows, so if
you are
going for their sound-styles, you might prefer a Strat. Also, it is acknowledged
as the
most versatile of all solid-body guitars. If you go the Strat route, choose
carefully; the
wrong pickups or any other number of factors can make 'em sound quite far from
what we
think of as surf tone. I am partial to either Seymour Duncan Antiquity pickups
or the
Fender '57-'62 vintage-style pups. But there are a lot of vintage single coil
styles for
Strats.
Having owned all three guitars, I find myself happiest with my Strat, but
envious of others'
AVRI Jaguars for their tone. I liked the control layout and look of the
Jazzmaster best.
Ideally, I would want all three! Sigh.

Strat will give you more options. Look at any manufaturer selling
pickups. More Strat options than any other platform. (sounds like a
windows salespitch, eh?)
More neck options, more tremelos, etc, etc, etc...
Can't go wrong with a strat.
When my son and I went to Dallas for that Clapton guitar festival
last summer there were all kinds of playing styles represented for 2
days. I bet 85%+ of the electric performers used strats.
Course we have 3 of em so I'm totally biased.

My other guitar is an Ibanez AG75, and I'll play it through my Peavey
TransTube 258 EFX (25W) combo, or my Vox T-25 (25W) bass combo. Which
one I plug into, at any given time, all depends on my mood, when I
plug in...do I want to rock out (through the Peavey), or do I want to
"slither through the swamp" (through the Vox)? I've got a set of Ernie
Ball Slinky Top Heavy Bottom strings (10, 13, 17, 30, 42, 52) set to
go on the Fat Tele, whenever I've got room enough to get it from
storage. For my Ibanez AG75, I've got a set of Ernie Ball Beefy Slinky
strings (11, 15, 22p, 30, 42, 54), whenever I can bring myself to
getting around to changing the strings.
Whenever I can buy a Fender Telecaster (looking at ones around the
$700.00 range), I'll most likely go with a set of Ernie Ball Hybrid
Slinky strings for it. More than likely, I'll end up buying a Squier
Bullet Special, and a Seymour Duncan Invader humbucker (to replace the
one that'll come on the Squier) before going for the Fender Tele, and
I'm also very much wanting to add an Ampeg 2x12 Reverb Rocket to my
collection. I can't wait to put my Ibanez AG75 through an Ampeg Reverb
Rocket...especially since it'll be my first ever tube amp. Honestly,
if at some point this year y'all don't hear from me, for a good while,
and I haven't said anything beforehand, it'd be a safe guess that I've
managed to buy an Ampeg Reverb Rocket. :)

Dan,
I agree with Dave on this one, but it all depends. If you go with a strat (I
just recently made that choice myself) there are a ton of choices. So many
strat models... too little time. I have had a few over the years and always
loved the sound, just could not get passed the cheap feel. I just recently
picked up an american deluxe strat maple FB (rosewood is nice too, but it
tends to shrink and you will feel the fret wire along the edges of the neck)
.. cheap feel problem solved and the sound of the new fender pickups is bang
on classic "BELL TONE" (i never cared for the lace pickups). the neck is
rounded for a warn in feel out of the box, and they even rounded the back
side neck joint corner, locking tuners and so on... best strat made to date
for playability IMHO...
Lewd
FYI I have been a mosrite and Gibson player all my life so this is the first
fender I have accepted as a legitimate child... :-)
