RE: [SurfGuitar101] Need bass recommendations...

The Detonators (overhead_ted) - 01 Apr 2005 10:36:13

Rick,
I just bought a Squier (I know don't laugh) Jazz bass for cheap ($209 in
Musician's Friend includign tax and shipping) and put new pick ups (Fender
Custom Shop '63 Jazz Re-issue) in for another $100 and it sounds like a
champ.
Not a bad way to go for a little dough.
Cheers,
Ted from the Detonators

Hey Ted,
Outta curiosity, do those pups really make a big difference. Reason being, I
played a Squire Jazz and was not impressed with its tone at all. Thanks.

Marty Tippens (mctippens) - 01 Apr 2005 11:24:58

When I needed a bass for a recording once, I walked up to my local music store
and picked up a Squire P-Bass Special. It was very close to 200 clams. It is an
excellent bass in terms of finish, neck, frets, action and it's nice and light.
I even like the stock pick-ups but I recommend flatwound strings as it's too
bright with roundwounds.

Hey Rick,
Hope all's well with you as well.
I actually replaced the neck with a Stewart MacDonald (sp?) maple neck. I
(actually Rob W.) did it to match the other maple neck, candy apple red
guitars the other guys bought.
Overall, the bass is a lot lighter than my American Made Jazz Standard and
plays easily.
Can't beat the price for a decent bass, especially after "hot rodding" it
out a little.
Cheers,
Ted

Zone Fighter (zonefighter) - 01 Apr 2005 11:41:06

Rondo Music's SX line are excellent cheap basses. They get great
reviews in the Harmony-Central Bass forums...
I got a SX SPJ-62 to bang around with which is very nice & my daughter
has one of their Short Scale Jazz bases (sold out now.) Both were
incredible deals at only $119.
The Green version of this...
kills me. They got them in a few days AFTER I bought the SPJ-62, grrrrrr....

Monty,
They kick ass actually. I bought them off of Musician's Friend and had them
installed by a guy in Redondo Beach, CA (Music Works).
It took a little work to get them to fit. The Custom Shop pick ups fit right
into an American Made bass, but the Squiers are a little different. They had
to cut the pick guard a little and rout out the wood slightly to get them to
fit.
Cost me $90 all together for the install (plus $100 for the pick ups).
The thing sounds great...well worth the time and effort.
Cheers,
Ted

I agree with Marty, I play flat wounds on mine, and it sounds a lot better.
Of course, I always like flats, just a preference I guess.

Thanks Ted. I have always wanted a Jazz bass but the American was way to
expensive. I ended up buying a Ibanez with active pups for $250.00. Great
deal, got the last one at that price. I love the necks on these babies and
the tone is awesome along with plenty of sustain.

You really need to play the rounds long enough to
deaden them, then they start to sound good. And by
dead I mean completely filth encrusted from your
dirty, sweaty fingers. That way you don't have all
that zinginess or brightness that comes from new
rounds but they're not quite as thuddy and old school
sounding as flats.

I'm not a "Bass Guy" (I used to be the bass player in a couple of
"sloppy rock" bands back in the 80's & 90's but I would never call
myself a Bassist.) That said the stock pickups in the SX basses I have
sound fine to me. I haven't felt a need to replace them, and I would
if I did (see below.)
The pickups that Rondo's guitars come with can be hit or miss. But
they are so inexpensive and well made otherwise that they make great
starting points for "project guitars" if you can get past the dumb
logos and ill shaped headstocks. I have several other guitars from
Rondo...
Agile 2500 Les Paul Gold Top style - Great sounding P-90s
(My niece has an Agile SG style with P-90s too, really nice guitar)
Agile IJ Cool Cat (Gretsch-ie looking semi hollow) Replaced the stock
"PAF" pickups with GFS "Liverpool" Filtertron-ish pickups a few days
ago. (This guitar was an amazing buy for $199. It may replace my Burns
Bison as my main guitar with a few more tweaks...)
SX STL50 Telecaster style - no complaints on the pickups in this one
SX SST57 Strat style - replaced stock pickups with GFS "Vintage AlNiCo
Stagger" sounds much more Buddy Holly/Richie Valens now.
I've had several Epiphones/Squires/Mexi-Fenders in the past and the
stuff from Rondo is as good or better.
I've got real Fenders, Guilds and weird vintage stuff too but keep
finding myself picking up my modern "Cheap Crap" guitars to play/gig
with because they sound very good and I don't have to worry about
hurting them (much.) I truly believe this is the "Golden Age of Cheap
Guitars."

Not laughing--this seems like an economical way to get decent sound.

Flats might sound thuddy on a P-Bass, but on a two pick-up bass like the Jazz or
P-Bass Special, the bridge pick-up brings highs and clarity to the sound.

Dave is right, if you want flat out awesomeness, it's
hard to beat the MIJ '51 and '54 (flower power)
reissues. Those things are sweet all the way up and
down and price in the grand scheme of things is middle
of the road (which is still expensive, but you get
what you pay for). The Dirnt bass is a little
different with an extremely meaty late 60's "B"
profile and a custom hop '59 split P-bass pickup
instead of the single coil the '51's and '54's come
with. It's my favorite bass and has all the tone that
my old AV '62 (a $1300 bass at retail) had. It had
flats on it when I got it and the sound was beautiful.
