Has Anyone in This Group Recorded With The New Tascam DP01 or DP01FX?

Bruce Duncan (wizzbangg2003) - 31 Mar 2005 14:46:40

My trusty old Tascam Porta 07 is ready for retirement, and in lookng
around at the alternatives, my attention has drifted towards two
recenly introduced Tascam digital models, the DP01 and DP01FX.
Current discount retail pricing is most attractive, with the DP01
available most everywhere at $400, and the DP01FX available at $500.
These are digital units, but, according to the manufacturer's blurb,
they are almost as easy to use, with controls set up very similar to
Tascam's Cassette units. I've seen some of the other digital units
out there, and frankly, this is a major plus-factor, if true. In
addition, the hard drive capacity is 40GB!!
I've also read about 40 or so owner reviews on the different Music
sites, and it seems that people either love these units or hate them.
Quality of electronic assembly is one issue raised by about 1 in 8
reviews, indications that the units had to be returned or repaired
under warranty.
I'm wondering if any other members have had the opportunity to
record with either of these units, and if so, what the experience
was like? I'm mainly interested in using the unit as a high-quality
notebook for new original songs, not for creation of anything we
would sell commercially.
Any comments from users of these units would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Bruce D

Bruce, I just bought a DP01 2 weeks ago. I'm finding that I'm very
satisfied with the unit, though I'm just getting into it. As a
guitarist like yourself, wanting to use it primarily as a writing tool,
I've found it to be designed very well, that is very simple to use, in
fact, much simpler than ye old 4 track cassettes of olde. Just to be
able to push a button and you're instantly at zero is quite an
advantage over tape. I personally prefer to run my guitar through a
reverb unit and mike my '66 fender pro reverb and call it good, so I
saved the money instead of buying the DP01FX. However, if you want
balanced and/or phantom powered mic inputs you need the DP01FX, I just
use 1/4" adaptors for the DP01. One thing I noticed in the manual that
lists the preset guitar tones on the DP01FX. is that one of the
settings is called "Surf", described as "suitable for west coast
surf", I guess this wouldn't work for the NESMA crowd : ) I

Hi Danny:
Thanks for responding to my posting. One of the nagging issues, is that of
quality, and in the 35+ reviews of these units, I read 5 or 6 in which the users
encountered unwelcome electronic "noise" through the monitors, or even onto the
recording itself, others mentioned poor left/right balance when monitoring the
recording through headphones, and I never once heard of such issues with my
friends who used the Porta 07. My 07 held up beautifully to 10 years of use, my
only complaint being the relativly low-fi results I'd get, even with top-grade
professional tape, and regular degaussing and cleaning of the heads.
I don't bat an eyelash at spending thousands on guitars, but this being a new
product, even at just $400-$500, I'm being extra-cautious, I guess.
Thanks again,

Hey Danny, Thanks for posting a response to my question. Since you're getting
into using the DP01, the complaints I've read, had to do with unwanted noise
through the headphones, while monitoring, poor stereo balance while monitoring,
and some found they had problems when trying to download recorded music to a PC.
Do you have any comments relative to these issues?
