dont know how to play a guitar but i can play a bunch of other
instruments such as piano, and the harmonica. does anyone know of any
places that have sheet music or something like that? any suggestions
would help. thank you
Hello,
There are a lot of ggod guitar tabelatures out there to play surf music.
They were a great help for me to.
Here are a few, but I'm sure the others will have more.
Paradise Cove;
Roland Bettenville's Homepage;
Surf guitar 101 tabs by Thor Andersen;
here you will find a lot of classic surf tunes from various great surf
bands. And since you can play various other instruments, I don't think
you will find these too difficult.
Hope this helps,
Jerry "The Ohm-man" S. from Belgium
In addition to the tab mentioned previously (and don't forget the tab found
in this group's file area), here are some of the surf related commercial
products I have seen. All of these kind of assume you already know how to
play the guitar at the most basic level...
Warner Brothers SongXpress has 2 instructional videos "Classic Surf for
Guitar Vol 1" and "Classic Surf (Spy & Rockabilly) for Guitar Vol 2". These
were made in partnership with Epiphone guitars, so there are some odd
choices for gear (and no reverb in sight), but they show you how to play
Misirlou, Wipe Out, Penetration, Walk Don't Run, Tequila, Pipeline, Secret
Agent Man, & Hot Rod Lincoln (these last two must be the "Spy" and
"Rockabilly" numbers). The videos are cheap, something like $10 (I got mine
in the clearance bin at a Guitar Center for $7.99), and they may even be on
DVD by now. Link:
Dave Celentano has a book/CD "Surf Guitar" that features tab for several
Torquays songs. The tracks on the CD have the full version and a version
without the lead guitar so you can play along. I got my copy from Elderly
Instruments ()
I have heard of such "Karaoke" CD's for the Ventures, but they seem to
available only in Japan. You see them pop up on Ebay a lot. They have
Ventures songs minus the lead guitar and usually tab.
The Atlantics from Australia sell a similiar book/CD combo featuring their
music ().
And lets not forget the original Play Guitar/Bass with The Ventures record
albums. I've heard that someone has reissued these on CD but you don't get
the booklets that came with the original records (they contain a sort of
crude tab format). You can hear these tracks at the gigantic copyright
infringement site:
I also have a tab book called "Surf Guitar" published by Creative Concepts
Publishing Corp. that has about 30 songs it it. Some of the choices are very
odd (Ricky Nelson) but they have lots of surf hits and pre-surf tunes (The
Fireballs, Duane Eddy, etc) that are cool too. I got this at a local Barnes
& Noble bookstore.
Good luck!

Hi, I recently bid on Dave Celantano's book mentioned above on
Surf Guitar on Ebay as a birthday present to myself. As
luck would have it, my girlfriend bid on the same book/cd
combo (he had a hundred books available in a dutch auction)
and now I have 2. If anyone is interested in this book, send
me an email and I will sell one of my copies for cost. I
have gotten through about half of the book and find it at
a beginner/intermediate level and all the songs are fun to
play. Definately a good surf primer. Thanks, A DeRosa
