What's the most-covered surf tune?

Richard (errant_jedi) - 28 Mar 2005 10:31:03

I got out my copy of Fiberglass Rocket again after
reading all the discussion here. It occured to me
that out of all the surf and instro albums I own,
Apache is the most-covered, not Pipeline or
Penetration, which we all profess to having our ears
worn out on. Covers of Apache that I can come up with
off the top of my head:
The Shadows (this wasn't theirs, was it?)
The Ventures
Link Wray
Davie Allen
The Turbo AC's
I know there are more that I can't remember right at
the moment.
Richard

INSTROMANIA.COM lists 8 Apache's, 13 Mr. Moto's, 7 Miserlou's, 11
Penetration's, and 15 Pipeline's. But I'm pretty sure their list is
incomplete. Dave

Trying to find out what's been "most covered" is very hard to do. For
instance, Instromania leaves off Agua Velvets, Duo Tones, Blue
Hawaiians, Pollo Del Mar and goodness knows what else when you search
for Apache.
You can search on realplayer's music store and tell em you want ALL
titles, not just the ones you can download. Apache comes up 250 times,
but that includes all Ventures albums, all greatest hits, and any
other song that has the word "Apache" in it. And Misirlou, you got two
spellings, jazz, big band versions, etc.
(Check out some of the other versions of Miserlou as samples wherever
you buy online music: there's one by Vince Guaraldi (the Peanuts theme
guy), and one by Pete Seeger!)
