Re: Help Me Learn Surf Guitar

stratrhythm - 28 Mar 2005 09:51:52

What do you think the "core" surf repertoire is-beyond Wipeout,
ipeline, and Walk, Don't Run? I really want stuff that is
recognizable by the non-musicians I'm playing for.
Thanks, Michael
My current list of surf essentials that my son and I work from is:
Apache
Baja
Beyond The Surf
Blue Surf
Blunderbus
Bombora
Bulldog
Bustin' Surfboards
Church Key
Cruel Sea
Diamond Head
Exotic
Hawaii Five-O
Heavies
High Tide (Tranquilizer)
Intoxica
Jack The Ripper
Latin'ia
Let's Go
Let's Go Trippin
Lonely Bull
Lonely Surfer
Misirlou
Moon Dawg
Movin'
Mr. Moto
Out Of Limits
Penetration
Perfidia
Peter Gunn
Pipeline
Point Panic
Raunchy
Raw-Hide
Rebel Rouser
Revellion
Riders In The Sky
Runaway
Secret Agent Man
Shut Down, Part II
Slaughter On 10th Avenue
Sleep Walk
Steel Pier
Stoked
Summertime Blues
Surf Beat
Surf Rider
Surfer's Stomp
Telstar
Tequila
Torquay
Vaquero
Vesuvius
Walk, Don't Run
Wedge
Wipe Out
K-39
Last Date
Crystal-T
Goofy Foot
Endless Summer
Journey to the Stars
James Bond
Tidal Wave
The Hearse
Chiflado
Kamikaze
All these songs were either covered at leat 2 or 3 times
by "original" (early 60's) surf bands or were included because of
probable familiarity to audience (ex.: Shut Down II by the Beach
Boys was on an album that sold a zillion copies) If I remember
correctly I also left out certain covers that kept coming up like
Louie Louie, What I Say, because they weren't surfish and I left off
Batman (even if Link Wray did it) just because.
Also on the basis of being played often on "surf radio" stations and
on discusions in this group. I would offer the following totally
tentative short list of "modern classics:"
Killer Dana
Having an Average Weekend
Polaris
Calhoun Surf
Solaris Stomp
Storm Dancer
Tailspin
University Ave
Good Luck,
Dave

Oops, left off Bells of St Kahuna on the "new" list and Ninth Wave ,
Point Panic, and Wayward Nile off the classics list.

That's a purdy good stab at it, Michael and I think the rest of us should make
suggestions. It needs Squad Car and Mr. Rebel. There are a few on there that are
beyond the core. Blue Surf, Blunderbus, Chiflado may be great tunes but I've
rarely heard anyone do those tunes. I only know of the Challengers version of
Chiflado and the Rhythm Kings version of Blue Surf. I've never heard Blunderbus.

Sorry that should have read Blunderbus.

going deeper with Paul Johnson songs, after all....
P.S. Great job with your tune for the MP3 comp!

Let me add my two-cents regarding the SG101 MP3 compilation - Marty, if they ask
for a vote of the best submission, your rendition of El Cumbanchero deserves the
Gold Medal!

a few on there that are beyond the core. Blue Surf, Blunderbus,
Chiflado may be great tunes but I've rarely heard anyone do those
tunes. I only know of the Challengers version of Chiflado and the
Rhythm Kings version of Blue Surf. I've never heard Blunderbus.

I'll have to look that Bel Air's Chiflado up. I wonder if its one of those Bel
Air's recordings that is the same as the Challengers recording, or at least so
close it's hard to tell any difference.
Thanks for the compliment!

" I only know of the Challengers version of Chiflado"
Yeah Marty - What Big Tiki Dude said! Surely you've
heard "Chiflado" done by the Belairs?! After you harrassed me into
going deeper with Paul Johnson songs, after all....
P.S. Great job with your tune for the MP3 comp!
