Jon & The Nightriders

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 24 Mar 2005 20:42:50

I've been listening to all my Jon & The Nightriders CD's again after a
long time. These guys are just brilliant. Raw & Alive '98, Moving
Target, Fiberglass Rocket....and Undercover, which is a set of great
covers of obscure songs. Does anyone know if they are permanently done
or just on a long hiatus?
And talk about super groups, at one point their line-up was John
Blair, Dave W, Dusty, and Pete Curry! Yikes!

-Brian,
I must say that I do really Miss Jon and the Nightriders.
There was a bit of a falling out that happened, but I won't spill the
bloody details j/k.
But Dave and Dusty both had very nice things to say about Jon at
the Slacktone 10th anniversary party, and said they hope in 10 more
years maybe Jon will be there and Play with them.
We can only hope, and cross our fingers.
What's also bizare about the band members is.
First time I saw J&tNR's Mike and Sam from Agent Orange sat in
on a few songs. Then Dusty Joined Agent Orange as an ocasional
player. Then Dusty left Jon to play with Dick. So Jon got Steve
the other Agent Orange drummer. Then Pete left Jon to join the
Los Straitjakets, and brief stint with the Torquays. So Sam also
joined Jon from Agent Orange. One time at a big Rendvous of older
bands,Jon & t NR's was on the bill, but Slacktone was in Europe,
So Mike palm from Agent Orange sat in for Dave. Then when Mike
Sullivan(original Bassist for Slacktone)passed away, Sam Joined the
group. Then recently Sam Joined Dick Dale after Ron left after 20 +
years. Then very recently Dusty Left Dick Dale to play with
the Super Suckers, But Sam stayed. Who know what will happen next.
Picture this, it'll never happen but.....
Dick Dale/Jon Blair/Dave Wronski/Mike Palm/Sam/Pete/Dusty
that would be a SURF SUPER GROUP if there ever was one.
A boy can dream can't he?

Yeah that's quite the intricate knot...someone should draw it out.
It's probably not as tangled as the Deep Purple/Rainbow/Black
Sabbath/Dio/Whitesnake/Gillian/etc, etc, family tree, but pretty good
for our little surf community. I agree, someday all of those guys you
mentioned should play together. Too bad Dick doesn't seem to keen on
that kind of thing (although he did play with Nokie Edwards at Deke's
guitar geek NAMM party). Pete Curry has sat in and played with a ton
of bands too, seemingly playing a different instrument each time!
Didn't Pete play drums with Davie Allen for a while?

-Brian
yeah like those family tree type things that come in the Box Sets.
I highly doubt it too, mostly on Dicks part. I bet everybody else
would be up for it. I heard that Dick Nokie thing was a bit of a
train wreck.
Yeah Pete and Jeff Utterback have both play with something like 10
surf bands . I didn't hear about Pete with Davie Allen, but I
wouldn't be surpised as... Chris Ashford the guy that is in
connection with the early Halibuts stuff also does stuff with
Davie Allen.

I was listening to Apache from Fiberglass Rocket this morning on my way to
work. That is the best version ever.
