The future is so bright....

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 24 Mar 2005 20:26:42

I dunno, you got the Surf Coasters touring America, getting everyone
excited about surf, Satan's Pilgrims is releasing new material and
playing live again, The Ghastly Ones have a show coming up; we still
got bands like The Nebulas and The Infrareds; The Madiera show
up....all these young guys are playing in surf bands (looking in
Bill's direction...but there is also The Volcanics, Jacob & The Verb,
etc), Slacktone just had their 10 year anniversary....I'm kind of
cautiously optimistic about how things are going. It's not another
wave of surf, but it's comforting to know surf seems to be here to
stay...sustaining itself.
What's next? Will The Bomboras reform? Will that next Fathoms album
reappear? Will The Bambi Molesters tour America? I would have said
hell no a year ago, but now...you never know...!
Thoughts?

I am very excited at this point and time. The Surf Coasters were
amazing. I think with some heavy touring by some of the top bands Surf
could gain a larger niche is America. Everyone at the Coasters shows
absolutely loved them. I would love to see the Bambi Molesters here.
They are in my top five of favorite surf bands. Top three I would even
say.
My band is starting to get more shows and we are hoping to get enough
shows to make a run to California in September. We are independently
seeking them now. If anybody want to let us on a bill or help us out
that would be appriciated. And for the record the band I am in is
called The 'Verb not The Verb. That is something we are going to have
to get very used to. Nobody notices the '.

time (I guess it's a compliment...?)

Younger people are diggin the surf music I guess, I dunno I don't
think there is any huge upsurge but it's weird to have 16 y/o girls
compliment your band. When I was in highschool in the late 90s I
remember getting teased for some of the bands CDs like the
Treblemakers, Dick Dale, etc, that I had in my first car, and
finding musicians who were into surf at that time around my age was
IMPOSSIBLE. Look at rockabilly 10-15 years ago, it wasn't as big as
it is now it's more recognized EVERY city has a few rockabilly
bands, with a lot of younger members. There's no huge wave of
rockabilly going on either, but it's there, and I think it's there
to stay. Hopefully surf will be like this(exspecially in the mid-
west, I can't speak for the westcoast).
Just as a side not, I found a band on myspace today that is a few
counties away from me and they are playing surf, all the members are
16 years old. I think kids just want to play guitars again.

-Brian,
see my short review of the Tiki Tiki Bamboos on cowabunga also.
I listened to Clint's show and he had them on for an interview, and I
called i and asked a few questions.
They are not totally up my alley style wise, but good enough
if I had the $$ I'd follow them up north to see them in SF.
Jeff(bigtikidude)
also Outterwave is a really good group of older guys doin 50/50
mix of obscure and known covers, 90% 60's songs.

Even more good news:
I just saw on Reverborama that NESMA announced Frankie Blandino has
revived The Fathoms and they are playing live again! (they have a new
lineup apparently).
Wow...it's like 1995 again. Are the Bomboras next? The Treblemakers?
The Space Cossacks? :-)

speaking of THE BOMBORAS, there are strong tremors coming out of their
camp....don't be too surprised about a potential re-emergence of this
great band
stay tuned!

I spoke with Zak of the Treblemakers recently, he reviewed our album
and he didn't mention anything about a return. The Treblemakers in my
opinon, were one of if not THE best of those late 90s bands. "Vs. the
Doomsday Device" has had a big impact on our band and we don't even
have the full sound they did with so many members. I do know Zak has
been pretty busy with his rockabilly band the Alley Dukes.
But, I would really like to see the Finks come back, the Phantom
Surfers as well.

Occasionally I see that The Phantom Surfers are still playing live, so
perhaps they haven't broken up entirely...
I'm still scratching my head about XXX Party (I also scratched the
cover too... ;-) )
