Anyone in or near Athens, GA?

Richard (errant_jedi) - 31 Aug 2002 22:58:53

Hey guys, just wondering if anybody on this list was
from around here. I just moved to this place about
two weeks ago and figured I'd inquire here before
spending money to post an ad in the local rag to try
to spark interest in an instro-surf/garage band. It
seems like the northeast and the west coast have all
the bands...

Athens GA? That there is ground zero for R.E.M. music (which SHOULD stand
for rectally embellished music, cause it sounds like shit!). The Penetrators
play out of Atlanta which isnt too far from you..... Gotta be some surfer
fallout there somewhere. What do you play?

I play bass and just started playing guitar a little
while ago. And yeah, Athens is ground zero for REM,
something this town is still riding...there's an
unspoken rule around here; if you see Michael Stipe
around town, you don't talk to him. Not that I would
have anyway, but it just seems kind of silly. I've
noticed a bunch of different types of bands here, but
sadly no surf bands and surprisingly few punk bands.
I'm hoping that by placing an ad in the Flagpole
magazine I can generate some intereste for something.

Athens is where Man Or Astroman? got its start. Besides REM, B-52s
also hail from there, and they had a big surf music connection,
Mosrite guitar and twangy riffs and all. And there's a surf
connection even with REM - Peter Buck, the founding member, and
another guy that's been playing keyboards for them for a few years
were guests on the Bambi Molesters most recent record, and they even
mastered (maybe even mixed) it in their own studio in Seattle or
something. The Bambis opened for them in Slovenia, and apparently
REM guys were in the pit going nuts over them. So, cut REM a break.
All of this, of course, isn't going to help you in finding other surf-
music interested people, but I'm sure they're there. Larry "Moon
Dawg" White lived in Athens until about two years ago, and we (the
Space Cossacks) stayed with him on a couple of occasions; he also was
very close to MoAM in their early days, as well as being a great
supporter of the Penetrators, who aren't too far in Atlanta. His
email is - you should ask him if he can refer to
you to somebody. There is a record shop where the employees were
into surf music, but I can't remember the name of it now....
