Latino Surf

Phil Dirt (dirtkfjc) - 18 Mar 2005 18:18:36

Lots of Latino players in the surf instro universe,
and influences, and sub-genres... the Sentinals of
course, and Dave Myers and the Surftones, several
members of Dick Dale and his Del-Tones, the illusive
and legendary Manuel and the Renegades, the Crescents,
the Torquays (San Jose, CA), and more.
The whole East LA scene was way cool too, and is
relatively unknown. There are some great comps out
there, and lots of rare singles. The earliest east LA
band that has caught my attention was Ricky Rillera
and the Rhythm Rockers (one of the Rillera Brothers
later played in Dick Dale's band), who were the
backing band the night Richard Berry was moved to
write "Louie Louie" based on the opening riff of their
openning instro before bringing him out back in '55 or
'56.
Top of that heep was Thee Midnighters IMHO, whom Marty
mentioned. They still play the fairground circuit.

Yes, not only Richie Valens is an example of early
Latin Rock but so was the whole east L.A. scene
including the Sevilles, Cannibal & the Headhunters,
and Thee Midnighters. If you don't have the Al Garcia
and the Rhythm Kings CD, you are missing out on one of
the best instro reissue CD's of the last 10 years.
