Surf Coasters on KEXP

jacobdobner - 18 Mar 2005 16:14:16

This was a really great broadcast. They started off with Samurai
Struck. Then they play a song I recognized but I don't know the name
of. And after that came Bumble Bee Twist or whatever they are calling
it. Then came an interview that I found very tedious. They came back
with another song I recognized but didn't know the title of. It was
very good. And I don't recall if they played another song inbetween
that song and Intruder. Intruder was awesome. Shigeo didn't do the
slight mess up that happened on the Samurai Struck Live version and
that I hear he does on the DVD.
I am going to the next three shows so I will have reports of those. I
will try and copy down the set list from what I know or if I am lucky
I can get a actual set list or copy it down on paper.
One funny question they asked the Coasters is if they knew the
Ventures were from the ares. They said yes. And then they were asked
if they would be visiting Tacoma where they are from. That got met
with a very quick no.

Since I mentioned the flub I think I should clarify. At the beginning of
The Intruder on the recent KFJC performance, there is a slight mis-step
during the opening chords...nothing big, but you can hear it. This was
the first time I had ever heard a mistake come out of that guy. I was
beginning to think Honda had built a human-like surf guitar playing
robot to fool the Americans. But no, he's human after all. :-) There
are no flubs to my knowledge on the "On Stage" DVD....

Cool! Yes, please report back. Also, I've heard that their set lists are
in Japanese, but try to get one anyway and scan it.
Thanks in advance Jacob! Have a great time at the shows for us.

They write their set list in Japanese. Someone asked for the set list
at Suzy's, and the bass player just showed it to them and laughed.
Awesome live band. They put a slack-jawed grin on your face. See them
as many times as you can while they are here.

Surf Coasters on KEXP were truly perfect - flawless!
The interview was a bit pedestrian, but it was cool to hear them speak
Japanese!
01 - Samauri Struck
02 - Midnight Headlight
03 - Bumble Bee
04 - Interview
05 - Nineteen
06 - Intruder
Too short though...

Except there were no flubs. The flug I was talking about is very tiny
and it is the live version of Intruder from the Samurai Struck album.
I don't own the DVD but I heard that Shigeo messed up on Intruder on
that DVD. Although Brian says he doesn't.

By the way. If the band likes burgers, fries and shakes you should go
to a place called Dick's. Just as good if not better than In-N-Out or
so I hear. The fries and shakes are really good and everyone loves the
burgers. And it is cheap. There are several around Seattle. If you
want to go while in the area just ask anybody around Seattle. They
will know where the nearest one it.
Sorry for the off-topic everyone. Just rying to keep the band happy.
And to keep it on topic... The Surf Coasters are a great band.

Has anyone been able to find the Surf Coasters in the "Stream Archive" or "Live
Performances" section? If so, how? Where is it?
Thanks

Hey San,
Thanks for digging that out, I'm listening to it now. It is very cool
to hear them speak Japanese, unfortunately the interviewer has some
pretty lame questions! Cool music as always.

Just a final story about The Surf Coasters. As I was
heading to the airport monday morning, Mark from King
of Hawaii called and said turn on KEXP. The DJ was
playing "Samurai Struck" and I cranked up the stereo.
After the song, the DJ said something like "That was
the Surf Coasters from their new CD. They were amazing
when they played at our studio last Friday, and their
show at the Liquid Lounge was fantastic. Last night
they played to a packed room at the Mars Bar, so they
have been pretty busy here in Seattle, and I hope they
come back soon." The timing was unbelievable, I got so
excited I drove past the exit for the airport. The
band was just so happy to have been so well received
on this tour. I know they are just aching to come back
for more.
And one last thing about KEXP, and I'll say Phil
Dirt/KFJC and Clint Beachwood as well. The best
attended shows the Surf Coasters played were in towns
with a supportive radio show. The fans are listening
and responding!

No, I am just the roadie. Give a hand to the band. I
didn't do anything that anybody else could have done.

Well, Ference, you booked the Surf Coasters a lotta gigs around a large part of
the west, enough to make it worth their while to come back to the States. I'm
guessing a lot of club owners were saying "the Surf wha?" Maybe someone else
coulda done the same thing, but only you actually did. And the crowds were
there, that doesn't happen without you gettin' the work around. I give you equal
credit as the band.

Ferenc,
How did you guys hold up? Was everyone exhausted by the end? I thought
the first few songs on KEXP sounded a little slower than the KFJC
performances. How did the band feel about their 2nd tour of the US?
Thanks,
BN
PS And what happened to your amp on KFJC? :-)

everybody was exhausted, but very happy. they could
have kept on going for a long time.

As I said before, that day the band was operating on
3-4 hours of sleep. The start time at the station got
moved up 3 hours to accomodate another band in the
afternoon. There were a lot of days with to little
sleep.
> How did the band feel about their 2nd

One great sign is that every monday, I would ask them
what the best show was "so far". They would always
reply whatever the most recent show was... with the
exception of Ashland and Portland which were poorly
attended. Ashland I expected, its not a big town and
it was a Wednesday night, but Portland should have
been better. No radio stations there, or perhaps I
didn't do enough research. according to the band,
their top 5 favorite shows were: 1- Vancouver (insane
crowd), #2- Las Vegas (fairly insane crowd), #3-
Bottom of the Hill, San Francisco (they enjoyed the
bill with Slacktone and PDM which "sold out" the BotH,
and they sold 70 CDs that night, yes 70!), #4- The
Blank, San Jose, #5- EMP, Seattle
> PS And what happened to your amp on KFJC? :-)
I hadn't used my Bassman for about 8 months, and after
it warmed up, it sputtered and died. sounds like it
needs a cap job.
And 2 things no touring band should be without: the
Magellen GPS Navigator and Priceline.com

Vancouver was great. Although I prefered the EMP. Mainly due to more
songs and some really great covers of Baja and Apache. The sound was
better at the EMP was well due to them having their own gear.
