Insidiously...surf is penetraing young minds!

Gavin Ehringer (windanseabeachboy) - 16 Mar 2005 19:21:05

Hey, am I the only one who notices how many surf-songs get muzakked into
commericials? I don't mean the obvious - Dick Dale in Pizza and Car ads - but
the hidden
stuff. Like a local RV center than has some surfy- instro music as the
background? Or the
constant surf instro backing on National Public Radio? Or, as was mentioned,
Blue
Hawaiians backing Sponge Bob Square Pants? Probably a few of the people on this
list are
getting residuals from this commericialization of our music culture!
But, that's not such a bad thing. Subliminally, our music is making a comeback!
Yes, in the
minds of millions of TV and movie-addled Americans, surf instro music is there,
like a
festering cancer, ready to spread to every neuron and nerve ending. Like a flu
virus.
Why? Well, it's a nefarious plot of world domination thru mind control.
Who is at the center of all this? It's Brian.
Yes, Brian.
Now, you know.

I've always noticed this and I think it's because it's
so embedded in our collective subconscious...I mean,
people know surf when they hear it even if they don't
know to call it surf. There's a feel and a vibe that
goes along with it that is unmistakable. What it
amounts to in commercials is cheesy canned riffs for
commercials, but you get the same thing with blues and
cheesy rock too.
I hope this makes sense, I am flat out freakin' loaded
to the gills with cheap scotch. Blech.

Who is at the center of all this?
"What are we gonna do tonight, Brain?"
"Same thing we do every night, Pinky... Try and take over the world!"
Now, you know.

Good point. I catch it all the time. My girl friend and I were watching a
program just last night and a commercial came on. I do not remember what it
was, but I know it had a surf beat behind the talking in the commercial.
Surf is every where my friends.

Cartoon Network's Adult Swim (late night cartoons - I usually watch
Futurama before going to sleep) has been advertising this week that
their website has new mp3 downloads - including Man Or Astroman! The
song is called Alternate Closer. Check it out here:
It's everywhere! Indisiously...

Spongebob Squarepants on Nickelodeon has been known to feature music
by Los Mel-Tones, The Woodies, The Ghastly Ones, and The Blue
Hawaiians. And Pantera.. ;-)
The Man or Astroman? track on the adult swim site is the song they
would occassionaly close the Space Ghost Coast to Coast show. Most of
the time they used the Sonny Sharrock song.

The Jimmy Nuetron show also has a lotta surf / spy backround music but I think
it's a studio band.

Rocket
Power cartoon on Nick.
