Strat Nut Question

Lewd Dude (surfaliciousdude1) - 16 Mar 2005 08:28:59

So I have been playing this new strat alot and I love it, however... The
strings are hanging up at the nut always out of tune, and I can hear the
little ping ping noise as I tune it and use the trem arm. I want to replace
the nut with either the roller or graphite nut. Two part question, what one
do you guys recomend and what is the safest way to remove the current nut?
Thanx,
Lewd

Lewd,
Before you go doing anything serious. Have you tried applying any
pencil graphite or household oil? Before you do that take the
correct size string for each nut slot and run it through back and
forth. have you checked the string trees? Sometimes those need a
slight filing as well.
I couldn't recommend a roller nut, I've never owned one, but I do
have a graphite nut on my Gretsch 6120. Best thing I did was have
that replaced with a good old bone nut.

Yeah, that method works for me as well.

I disagree. I replaced the bone nut that some "bonehead" put in one
of my Strats with a graphite nut, and it vastly reduced the nut
binding and friction, and I found the resulting increase in open-
string tonal brighness appealing. Always be sure that your gear is
set up properly first. Any poorly installed gear will result in loss
of tone or poor performance. Graphite nuts are relatively cheap, and
not difficult for a qualified luthier to install. Try the GraphTech
Trem-Nut. There is also an accompanying Trem-Nut string
tree/retainer that can be installed. While the Fender roller nut
looks pretty cool, I'm not convinced that its suitable for all setups
since it can't be "re-cut" to accommodate different string gauges and
actions.
If any lube is used, use dry graphite only. Household oil is not
only messy and collects dust, it has potential to ruin the finish if
it soaks into the wood surrounding the nut.
While bone is perferred by some players for its tonal quality, it is
an organic material, and is therefore highly inconsistent in
quality. For that reason, my preference is to use a properly-
installed nut of more durable manmade material. Be sure to tell your
technician/luthier if you are a heavy user of the vibrato bar; there
are several things they can do to help reduce binding at the nut and
string tress.
This is, unfortunately, an area where you may have to compromise in
order to get a balance of tuning stability and tone. Good luck.

Lewd, I told you before not to bother with the roller nuts.
Graphite nuts aren't that great, either, but they're better than
roller nuts. I will say it again: ALL YOU GOTTA DO IS TAKE THE
GUITAR TO A GOOD TECH (GOOD BEING THE KEY WORD!) AND HAVE HIM
PROPERLY CUT THE NUT ON YOUR GUITAR - MEANING FOR THE STRINGS AND
STRING GAUGES THAT YOU USE! That's all - it'll work like a charm
after that. The guitar techs have specialized nut files which are
necessary to do this correctly. And believe me, it'll be a lot
cheaper than installing a new nut, especially a roller nut. At
least give this a shot before you start messing with all this other
stuff.
Ivan
PS I never put graphite lead on my nut, and the guitars (I have
three Strats) all stay in tune beautifully. Of course you won't be
able to do Van Halen style whammy abuse, but you wouldn't with a
roller nut either. But if you gotta use the graphite lead, try that
before changing the nut.

supertwangreverb - 16 Mar 2005 13:23:57

I agree with Ivan, in response to Red Thundr, like Ivan says if you
properly set up your guitar there is no need for a roller nut, or
even a grpahite nut.
What's wrong with household oil? You don't just slop it on the nut,
do it carefully. This combined with the graphite makes a great
lube. I think I got this from the Guitar Player Repair guide or
some similar book.

On this subject of greasing your nuts (did I really say that?), I've been having
best success with an oil that has teflon in it. I had serious string hang up
problems with a Hipshot B-Bender Tele both at the nut and where the b-string
slides through the bridge. The oil with teflon has lasted for months keeping the
guitar in tune after mucho B-Bending. The brand I have is called "Tri-Flow" and
comes in a WD-40 type can.

buy it and kiss your string binding problems g'bye.
I'm still loaded.

Well, I must admit I didn't recall this detail. So, I
searched the archive to see if Richard was kidding or
not. Sure enough in post #4539, Mr. Wronski mentioned
this stuff.
Here's the link given in that thread for more info:
On a related note does anyone know Mr. Wronski's
preference for nut material? (yes, i said it) I
searched both the Slacktone and SG101 archive, but
couldn't find an answer to that question.
Thanks-
Rick

You people are sick.
Lewd - I had the same problem and went to a qualified "tech" and he used his
mojo
files to the string gauge I was using. It solved the problem. I have to go back
again
because I recently went up to 13 to 56. The strings are catching on the nut
agian.
And once again, you people are sick...
