Hello,
I got a MIJ '62 Jazzmaster re-issue. I'm very fond of this guitar, but
not of it's end plate, well actually not the endplate, but the tremolo
arm and it's attachment. I got this guitar for about 6 months now and
played it a LOT!! I replaced the bridge with a mustang one, so I got rid
of the buzzing.
Now the tremolo arm is getting on my nerves, at one gig, it even fell
out of the tail piece, some duct tape solved the problem for the show,
but I would like to get it replaced.
I recently checked a 1964 Jaguars tail piece and it has a different
tremolo arm attachment then the MIJ 62 re-issue Jazzmaster. It clicks
more into the tail piece and stays locked. So now the question, can this
part (tremolo arm + attachment point) be bought separately? I really
would like to know.
Or can I buy a U.S. made tail piece separately?
I really would like to know.
Thanks in advance,
Jerry S. from Belgium. "also thinking of replacing the soap bars by
Seymour Duncan classics II"
Jerry Dude,
Check out the www.fenderforum.com web site, and search in teh Jaguar /
Jazzmaster forum...like use the word 'arm' or whammy bar or whatever....this
problem has been covered there....in brief, if you take the tailpiece off,
you'll see a collet...this can be CAREFULLY tightened with pliers....test fit
the arm as you're working before replacing the tailpiece. Check out the jag /
jazz forum though...you got awesomely knowledgeable and friendly people there
like Jim Shine and Unquiet and many others who are always happy to help. THANKS
GUYS!!! Don't know if they subscribe to this group, but others in here know what
I'm talkin' about! RIght?
Good luck,
Brad Davis

P. S. -- Send me something excellent made only in Belgium....like candy or
something?? :) I'm really tired, forgive me....

The Fender Forum is the place to learn all things Jazzmaster. Look in
the archives to find all you could ever want to know.

I looked in my Stewart MacDonald catalog and saw whet
you probebly have. They show both the Mustang and
Jaguar. It looks like you had a integral endpiece
string holder and then went to a adjustable string
height bar baridge. OK, you can bite the bullet and
pay the bucks for an original and if you want to do
that buy the latest copy of Vintage Guitar and search
the parts ads in all the Guitar places. As this will
fit in the cavity left by the original Vibrato unit
this would be coolest but not the cheapest way of
dealing with this. I'll look through the older issues
I have. Being StewMac usually has a good indication of
what is available on the clone market the NOS way may
be the cheapest way. You could try also, All Parts,
WD, Warmoth, and if I can remember any more I will let
you know. What color is the guitar, hopefully Candy
Apple Red.
Peace

Ah, another guitar freak is out there. I'm also
interested in Jag tailpieces as I'm going to build a
Tenor Jaguar for my son who plays base. Just think a
detuned Big stock looking Candy Apple Red Jag. Way
cool, but the tailpiece trem system is a bit
interesting. I have built a couple of Strats and like
that one and if I can find one I wanna do a long scale
bass with a Kahler whammy. But for tenor strings???
But returning to the original post did you ever set
the thing up correctly? As I do know is tight is
right. Did you locate where that buzzing came from?.
It appears that something is loose. Well, did you
check when you removed the old one where the buzz may
be coming from. Maybe fix that? Loose whammy bar? How
does it mount? I know Starts screw in and a bit of
plumbers teflon tape tightened one up for mine.
Hope that helps.
Peace

Hello Rob,
Thanks for your reply.
I did locate the buzzing of the bridge. This was due to the lighter MIJ
used materials I assume. Any way the little screws which hold the
saddles always came loose, I also didn't like the Original Jazzmaster
Saddles since it was hard to keep the strings where the were suppose to
be, I prefer my newly installed non buzzing Mustang bridge which has
much better saddles.
As for the endplate...I just would like to have that the whammy bar
stayed in the endplate instead of falling out. The problem is that here
in Belgium not much is available. The music shop where I got my
Jazzmaster from said that MIA endplates are not sold separately. I don't
even need a whole new endplate, but just the whammy bar and or the
attachment point.
As for the color of my Jazzmaster it is a sunburst, not a candy apple
red one. I hadn't had a lot of choice when I bought mine it was either a
white one or a sunburst one. I opted for the latter.
Peace to you too,
Jerry S. from Belgium

Jerry,
For a loose arm: wrap 1 or 2 layers of teflon (plumbers) tape around it
before inserting it into the socket.
Or: take off the trem. assembly, insert the arm in the socket, and use
pliers to carefully crimp the sleeve tighter around the arm. I would not
suggest this on the MIA trem assembly, as the metal used there is brittle
and doesn't seem to bend. It will break very easily. (I've done it...twice!)
I don't think an MIA trem plate will fit an MIJ jag. You will get a better
answer on the Fender Forum, as previously mentioned. The tremolo assemblies
are sold separately, you can get them from Smart Parts.
People also suggest a little loctite or fingernail polish on the MIJ screws
to hold them in place. I haven't had any problems with this on my MIA
bridge.
Good luck

Jerry,
You should contact Albatross from Los Venturas
com/mt/losventuras/
He did the same on his guitar and he's from Vilvoorde so he knows where to
find it in Belgium.
