Hello,
I'm currently looking for a good (small) amp to practice some playing at
home since my amp is too big to take home from the rehearsal room.
I went to the store and tried a little "VOX" amp with a celestion
speaker, it sounded well and had an in build tremolo effect. The price
was a bit over $200. I think it was a 15 or 30 watt amp and it had some
line out jacks, so there are possibilities with this little amp.
But I'm wondering, what other small amps with good surf sound are out
there?
I don't want to spent a fortune, so let's say around $/ 200.
Thanks in advance,
Jerry S; from Belgium

I use the Danelectro "Honey Tone" amp for practice, which only costs
about $40 - and provides a pretty decent sound, for being slightly
smaller than a toaster. It can run on batteries, and even has a belt
clip. Three knobs include volume, treble/bass and overdrive.
It's not the world's greatest rig, but it's not half bad, and it's a lot
easier to lug around than a normal practice amp. Price isn't bad either.
Well worth a look-see if you're on a budget and need to move around a
lot.

Hi,
since you're in Belgium (i'm in the netherlands), you might want to consider
getting some cheapo from marktplaats.nl or 2ehands.nl, or some belgian
equivalent. I have an old sixties tube dynacord jazz amp (at least i've been
told it's dynacord, it says just 'jazz') which i got from marktplaats.nl for
around 35 euros/dollars. it's got no features whatsoever (volume and tone)
but has a killer sound. i'm currently installing a 10" instead of the 12" it
has , putting it in a smaller combo. i guess it's around 10 watts. stuff
like this is well available as far as i can tell.
as for the good stuff, i used to own a little peavey 15 watt tube tweed
practice amp which was amazing. if you want to spend the $200, you should be
able to get it secondhand....if you can find one. (actually i sold mine for
around that price.... didn't use it much. since i only have an L5 style
hollowbody at home, there's not much need for a practice amp. and besides, i
needed the money)
by the way, it had no trem or rev, but an awesome gain-control. can't
remember whether it was 1 or 2 band eq.
and uhhh, if it's really just practice you want, ever tried feeding
headphones through an overdrive or equalizer stompbox? works great! and
there always the old tube radio, to be found for next to nothing at flea
markets....
regards,
Wannes

Hi Jerry
One of the most overlooked brands out there is Rogue (made by
Fender? Squire?) The one I use is 30 watts, has a real spring reverb, and has
a nice overdrive. Very reasonably priced and a nice small package. Got this
one from Musicians Friend online. They are definitely worth looking at.

Hello Mike,
Thanks for your reply, the Rogue GC 30 R seams promising. The price
seams very reasonable indeed. And the (spring) reverb is also in it.
This is the kind o feature I was looking for. Now I have to find a shop
in Belgium that carries these products.
And as for my Whammy bar troubles, I'll try your suggestion.
Thanks a lot,

addict"

Jerry:
We're talking about making SurfMusic - so, why didn't anybody mention a
Fender practice amp?
In 2000 I bought myself a Fender Frontman Reverb for Euro 148,- (DM 290,-)
from MusikProduktiv here in Ibbenbueren/Germany (near the Netherlands'
border).
Made in Mexico, 15 watts, 1 x 8" speaker, headphone socket, clean or
overdriven to mean distorted channel.
Solid state, sure - but with a real spring reverb pan, it brings lots of
vintage sounding pearly splash.
I think it was last year they changed the cabinet's cosmetics, and now it
comes with a real silver grillcloth e.g..
I am completely satisfied with this little baby.
Regards,
Bernie
Jerry:
I'll second what Bernie said about the Fender Frontman - I've got a
25R, and it's a pretty decent practice amp. Sure, it's solid-state,
but it does sound pretty decent and the reverb's not too bad. That
thing can get pretty loud, too.
You can probably pick on up on e-bay for under $100 . . . here's one
I spotted today:

Good luck!

Sorry, guys!

Has anyone played, owned or tried out the small Danelectro amps, the Dirty
Thirty and whatever they call the one bigger and one smaller? I was thinking
about one of these with a Fender tank in front of it, or, one of that new
Dano 'verb pedal....
