NYC had 2 NESMA acts pass thru recently
Thursday, THE SURFALICIOUS DUDES closed the Benefit Show at Kenny's
Castaways put together by my friend BILL POPP. Stewd Lewd and
Sticky Dude are an amazing, intense, fuel-drivin' power trio
blastin' away at the surf genre. Peeling paint off the walls, and
putting cracks in the glassware. These guys will give any surf trio
a run for their $$$. I'd love to see them present some 'original'
tunes...we've discussed this amongst ourselves, and I am
told "things are in the works". The day these tracks are first
heard, I am gonna go out on a limb and state it's gonna be a wake-up
call for surf musicians and surf-rock fans. Dangerous musicians,
these lads. Sticky might be the most intense "surf" drummer I have
ever had the please to witness. Big Daddy Stewd keeps a "steady" (a
word I am not that familiar with) backbeat, which Sonny Boy Lewd
attacks his Mosrite non-stop. Guys, the show was a sheer joy...I
cannot get enuf you!! I am not sure, but you may have further
pulverized my kidney stone. Took x-rays Friday but don't have the
results back yet.
Friday, THE 9TH WAVE played at good ol' CBGB's Downstairs. Negative
Ed was playing bass too...love that guy! His wife can certainly
shake 'em down...she was dancin' non-stop. Ed-you're a lucky guy!!
Phred has really made himself a part of the band behind the skins
too. Great surf-beat drummer....and a nice fit with the hot-rod
sounds of The 9th Wave. Oceana was behind the Farfisa, and a quick
question....do you put fertilizer on those legs? Stunning! Shades
of "Jack and the Beanstalk" baby!! Looking gorgeous!! And I should
add playing some crisp chords on the Farfisa. And then she grabs a
flute and plays with expertise. And then she straps on the Fender
and strums in tandem with Mike Staccato Rosado, who's ripping up the
place on his Fender....what a duo these two make. Thanks for
dedicating one of your tunes to me....most honored. CBGB's event
was insane, incidentally. Part of theme included "porn". Unsteady
frreddie, having just left the Cloisters where he was a monk in
seclusion for years, was totally offended. After leafing through
about 10 magazines of gorgeous naked women, I finally decided I had
enough and was disgusted. I took some of them home with me just to
make sure no one else would be able to witness this filth. For
shame.
Further proof that NESMA has got the goods on the East Coast surf
scene. B R A V O to ya'
Oh yeah, should mention BLUE STINGRAYE was "in da house" lookin'
damn nice in a look that reminded me of those girls from "HeeHaw" --
gotta love that!! No reason to leaf thru those magazines when real
beauty is struttin' around.
