Electric 12-string sound and surf guitar?

ohsyrus - 12 Aug 2002 14:03:31

Well, I am sure that my question will strike some people as strange,
curious, or downright weird--but, I have this cd by Simon Jones,
Instrumentals Vol 1--and he plays a Mostrite 12-string on some of the
songs. With compression, it's sort of reminiscient of a sitar--and I
just can't stop thinking how cool it would be to have an electric
12-string as a toy.
But--I have small hands, and I've never played one. I've been all over
deja.com reading about electric 12-strings--and many people have
commented that they can be difficult to play--and that they can change
the way you play a six-string. Nobody in my neighborhood sells
electric 12-strings--so I would have to go a pretty fur piece to try
out a Ric. Has anybody here played a Ric 12 string before and if
so--can you comment on their general playability? Some of their models
are so popular that you have to order from the factory and wait 5
months for delivery. I can't imagine ordering a guitar that I've never
even auditioned--I'm worried that after delivery I won't be able to
play it. Still...
Also, on a more trivial note, can anybody think of any other
recordings of surf music where someone plays a 12-string(besides Simon
Jones)?
Thanks!

Hello Ohsyrus,
Well an electric 12 string is pretty cool, the acoustic sounds a bit
like a sitar, wait until you played an electric one!
I played on one which belonged to a friend of mine, I think it was a
Gibson one, sort of like a Les Paul. It sounds great, even though I'm
more of a Fender guy myself.
If you got small fingers, you should look for a guitar that suits you
best, even if it is a 12 string. It's like a six string, some have wider
arms some smaller.
If you want a 12 string, I should advise you not to go for a cheap
model, they are pretty hard to tune and I can assure you that you don't
want one that loses tune every time you play it. This is very
frustrating.
Anyway, you can also play it like a six string, when you put only one
set of strings on it. It sounds just as good.
I have no idea if anyone else played surf tunes on a 12 string, but
hey...look at the opportunities...Nice....Imagine wipe out or some Man
or Astro Man? On a 12 string....whoehahaha.....Lets surf!!!
