New Surf Coasters @ Double Crown

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 28 Feb 2005 21:15:33

So does anyone have the new Surf Coasters CD yet? I just ordered mine
yesterday from Double Crown.
Sean has also got his first "podcast" up that is kind of interesting.
He plays some good music and talks about the history of the magazine
and label. Don't worry, you don't need an i-pod to listen to it, but a
hi-speed internet connection is probably a must. It's a big mp3 file.

I just looked at the tracklisting and it doens't look like it is an
original album. I don't have all of them so it doesn't matter to me. I
will wait until they play up here to buy my copy. If they are out of
CDs I will pick a copy up from Zptduda assuming they have them.

Even if only four of the songs haven't been released before in some
form (counting the DVD & KFJC webcast), I'm still waiting anxiously
for it to arrive from Double Crown.
Best case scenario, if it sells well domestically, their future
albums will also get distribution here and they'll play more dates in
the Western hemisphere.
Besides, it's a brand new Surf Coasters album for less than $20, and
unlike the last time this happened, if you order it, the odds are
infinitely better it'll actually show up. I'm struggling to find a
drawback to that.

All of the tracks are new recordings, if not new
songs.
The Surf Coasters are compeled by their fans in Jp to
record "Miserlou" for every album. They re-recorded
"Dreams" because it is something of a well known song
in America, as Phil Dirt has featured that song for
years (it originally came out on their first CD, Surf
Panic '95) the SCs were surprized to learn that people
in the US knew about, and they had never played it
live until last year's tour. I don't think the new
version is very good, compared to the original, kind
of limp, but the first album is long out of print, so,
if you want "Dreams" this is what you get. "Bumble
Bee" is by far the most outstanding version of this
song I have ever heard. Unbelievable. The rest of the
album is a rippin' blast. The US version has live cuts
recorded in Japan (probably at the same show the DVD
was recorded), the Japanese version features a handful
of songs recorded byy Mr. Dirt at KFJC last year. and
yeah, ZptDuda should have them as well.

Dreams is one of my favorites. I have it on the Surfside Village album.

Ack, I meant Surfside Village. I am amazed by the
knowledge and attention to details of surf fans!

I just got my copy today....holy f***.
Ferenc did an excellent job on the liner notes; I've always wanted to
know the history of the band.
Now I am even more bummed out about not going to CA....! At least I
got to see them the first time....yeah, that's it, <sob>....

How many days did it take to reach you? I gave in and ordered my copy
today. I couldn't wait. Warren from the group sent me a link with a
song sample that Ferenc posted earlier. For those who don't want to
wait to read the liner notes you can do so here.

I ordered it Sunday and got it today. Double Crown and Sean rocks. If
only he would leave me feedback on eBay for an recent unrelated
purchase....<hint><hint> :-)
I ordered some stuff from Zptududa also, will probably get that
tomorrow. Dave is also very fast. I've been really eager to check out
Bruno and The Wet-Tones. I've heard one song and it's killer.

I really like Zptduda as well. I get my stuff real fast from them.
Dave has always thanked me for my return business. Also shipping is
only a buck. Can't beat that. And they have the Bambi Molesters DVD in
stock. I have watched that thing about every day since I have gotten
it. More surf bands should have DVDs. I need the Surf Coasters DVD for
under $30. Are the Surf Coasters and Bambi Molesters the only surf
bands with DVDs?

I'm almost equally bummed about some of the list members not being
here for the shows as the Nebulas cancelling their tour.
But like you said, you did see them before.
ttyl,

Double Crown Records / The Continental Magazine (contrec) - 03 Mar 2005 00:04:47

--I've been so busy filling orders for Surf Coasters CD's (thanks in large
part to your post, I'm sure) that I haven't gotten around to leaving
feedback for Ebay sales. I always leave feedback, but I usually do it once a
month all at once. Also gearing up for a big Rat Holic CD mailing for Double
Crown Music Club members - it's supposed to arrive via UPS Friday!
Thanks,

On my second listen to the new CD, I am really struck by how much the
Surf Coasters are one of those "boundary" / edge surf bands. They are
more like a big rock band power trio that has surf influences. Big
washes of feedback, distorted guitars, etc., but you still get the
reverb kick and glissandos..ha-ha....still I like it a lot though.
Definitely a band to see live!
I do think I prefer the original Dreams, but only by a little.

My copy came today. Very good album. After listening to the samples on
Zptduda I didn't think I would find it as good as people were saying.
Now that I have heard hi-fi and full versions I think it is excellant.
Definately on par, if not better, with the rest of the Surf Coasters
catalog.
