Slacktone video help

Charlie Kinyon (mailmale48) - 26 Feb 2005 17:48:59

I put some short (15 second) video clips on the Slacktone website. I
don't know a lot about this stuff, and Dusty is having a less than
enjoyable experience viewing what I have up there now. Would any of you
like to go look at them, and tell me what it's like at your end? Any
suggestions would be welcome to help me make them more universally
accessible. They are QuickTime MPEG files:
Thanks in advance!

Charlie,
I took a quick look at two, and they worked just fine for me.
I'm using the Firefox browser on Windows with a broadband connection.
They play a bit jerky if you have the Quicktime browser plug in. I
just hit pause until the entire video loads, rewind, then hit play.
Then it plays very smooth.
If Dusty has a dial-up then he is probably in for a long wait. What is
he seeing?
Thanks so much!!!! These are awesome!

I too am using Firefox with broadband. They work fine for me. You just
have to let them load fire and have quicktime. The clips are great.
Thank you very much. I always love seeing Slacktone play.
My suggestion is full video clips.

Hi Charlie,
I viewed them with RealPlayer, QuickTime, and Media Player. Each
player worked just fine and the clips looked really good. With a
1.5MB connection the download time was about 20 seconds, so that
wasn't a problem either.
Do you know the specific problem Dusty is having?
thanks for the videos,
Sarah

Charlie, I just downloaded them all and watched them. Worked great for
me, thanks a lot....you just made my day.
Those are very good quality clips for being in color and around 5 MB
in size. How did you make the clips?
As for posting full song clips, I don't think everyone realizes how
big these files get, which means it chews up both disk space and
bandwidth / per month (which means more money out of Slacktone's
pocket). Maybe they could rotate a full song every month or something.
But this means someone (Charlie?) has got to edit and transfer the
song....it takes some time and work. In any event, Charlie, you
deserve the surf medal of honor for this and your other efforts.
Thank you!!!

Maybe I should give you all a little more info on these clips. They
were taken with a Sony Mavica MVC-CD300 digital camera (still photos)
which also takes 15 second video clips. I didn't edit them, they are
raw from the camera. Sorry they are so short - I watch them and it
leaves me wanting to see the whole performance - which is why Dusty and
I thought they would be good, you know, a "tease". I have multiple
computers here: older and newer Macs, older and newer PCs, and they
work fine on them all. But out there in the real world it seems there
are vastly different configurations and levels of technological skills.
Maybe there is no foolproof way to post these. Should I just put them
out there, even though it's frustrating when some people get crappy
results, or are unable to view them at all? (which might make the
Slacktone website seem unprofessional) Or should I just skip it
altogether? I hate not being able to make this stuff perfect /
flawless...

Charlie,
You are right, there is a vast range of technology and more
importantly, end user experience levels. I think the best thing you
can do is try out your clips on as many configurations of hardware /
software as you have available, and ask a few people to preview the
clips privately first. If that looks okay, release them to the world.
It looks like you did all that, so I say go for it.
The video clips we have on the SG101 site are also made with a still
photo digital camera, that just oh by the way happens to take movies
if you ask it really nice. Ours doesn't have a time limit however. We
took ours in black and white mainly to save space on the camera's
flash memory...also color doesn't turn out too good anyway in a dark
bar or club. I had to severley compress the quicktime clips to get
them on the web page...as a result, the quality suffers. It's a big
hassle of compromises and doing what you can on a limited budget.
Obviously I would have preferred to own a high-tech digital movie
camera, but those are a little pricey......
Someday technology will catch up and we'll be able to share full color
hour long concerts with each other over the super duper hyper
internet....
I'll repeat my offer that I make periodically...if anyone wants the
larger uncompressed versions of the movies I have on the site...email
me off list. Send me a blank CD and a buck or two for postage and I'll
burn you a copy. Don't expect a huge difference, it's not like they
will be in color or any bigger on screen, but a lot of the murkiness
goes away. The sound is about the same though.
I've also tried to burn the quicktime clips onto a DVD, but the
software I currently have for doing that is failing me miserably. I
eventually hope to buy some better software. That may be the most
convenient format to give to people.
Thanks again Charlie,
BN

I didn't realize Brians movies were still camera shots. And who cares
about the quality. They are surf videos and their aren't many of them.

Charlie,
No problems downloading here. Fortunately they opened with windows media player,
which I definitely prefer over quicktime. You can easily set up windows media to
play mpeg files.
The file are a bit large for small clips, could be frustrating to download with
dial-up connection. If you compress the files a little it would make them more
download friendly, however, you will sacrifice some of the quality. Personally,
I like the better quality. Good things are worth waiting for!! LOL
Thanks for posting them!
