I am wondering what the deal is with the 1962-64 Fender 6G6 Bassman
amp +(2X12 cab). Almost everyone I know who has had one uses it for
guitar, but I've seen tons of shots of o.g. surf guys playing bass
through them (in Bob Dalley's surfin' Guitars book). It's only 50
watts with Jensen C12Ns or Oxford 12M6s. Those are guitar speakers,
right? Doesn't seem like a great design for a bass amp. Shouldn't it
have been called a Guitarman? ~Mike
Mike,
As i said in an earlier post about the playing bass through the
Bassman and those 2x12 cabinets, they sure sound sweet but you are
right the speakers can't keep up with a Showman or any big Amp. I
played a 66 Bassman with the 2x12 cabinet and loved the way it
sounded, tight, punchy, in my opinion just great but blew speakers
left and right more times than I care to count. I got about 8 12's
in a trade so I just replaced em, but that became impractical. I
upgraded to a 2x15 JBLD140F cabinet and didn't look back.
Occasionally missed the sound of the 2 12 s but didn't miss all the
hassles. The 12's are better matched for guitar and just add reverb,
it makes its own sauce. Good one at that.
Take er easy
10-4 Im gone

I've always heard that back in the first wave days
there wasn't much in the way of bass amps...at least
not compared to the kind of clout the guitar players
had. I was told that bass players did the best they
could but they didn't have near the kind of luxury we
do now in terms of equipment.

that's my impression too - it mostly the speakers though, not the
amps so much - it seems to me that speaker's power handling has
improved tremendously. If you consider that even the JBL's are rated
at 150RMS or so. I just looked in to them, and the 15" eminences
don't go under 250 RMS - most are between 300 and 500...
I tried, and one JBL D140F can't handle a 100 watt bassman... so
you'd need that headroom, and a 100 wat bassamp is considered weak
these days. go figure, back then they had to do it with a 40w amp and
2 75 watt speakers...

Yeah, but, our bassist has had some pretty loud new Ampeg amps, and
none have the thunder that his '66 Dual Showman has. The 70s ruined
so much....

Bill, are you serious? I mean, don't get me wrong, I
have always had reverence for the power of the Showman
but it performs beyond the level of a newer Ampeg
head? What setup do you use and what kind of Ampegs
did he have before?

The '80s ruined more. Or were the '80s just a continuation of the
'70s? Silverface amps aren't as bad as some of the stuff Fender made
in the '80s. I would actually enjoy owning a silverface. The Bambi
Molesters get awesome tone out of their SF Super Reverbs live with
vintage Jazzmasters.

I have a 2x12 Bandmaster 40 watts. He had some new solid state 1x15
Ampeg jobber, it sounded like ass compared to the Dual Showman. He
never goes above 4 or 5 on the volume and I stick around 5-6. The
Dual Showman is a monster!

Have you kicked a hippy today?
I have!
I was just refering to the 70s in general. We played a show the
other night for a bunch of artsy hippies who though music of the 70s
was something of the Gods. All the 70s Silverface amps I've played
with master volumes were pretty lousy. I've got a friend who owns
one and he's speced it back to BF. I now the Strait Jackets do this
with their amps. What makes you think the Bambi Molesters' amps are
stock?
If I hear and more Steely Dan...
Although one of my guilty pleasures is 70s Elvis, atleast he still
shot at things.

I don't think their amps are stock. But I really enjoy the tone they
get out of them and if I could achieve the same tone that would be
great. It is different from the tone I would normally think of being
associated with a Fender amp. Dalibor of the Bambi Molesters prefers
the onboard reverb on his compared to his RI Reverb Tank. I thought
that was interesting. He says it has something to do with the
circuitry of the amp.
And REO Speedwagon rules. Have you had your fill of Toto today? I only
kid.

hey man, I'm from the 70's, gimme break!
silverfaces are decent - and very modable. even the UL's can be made
to sound okay - but nothing better - the older ones are better, and
easaly blackfacable. that's the problem; you see a silverface, and
you don't have clue what it is: anything can be inside, from '63
schematic 'til a '79 schematic - huge difference!
claiming a ss ampeg is an ampeg is like claiming a fender sidekick is
a fender haha. A friend of mine has a 65 watt solid state bass
sidekick. Just last week i referred to him as "the guy who does not
own an amp." - he never uses it too, always borrows one of mine, and
is currently looking for a real amp. there you go.
another former bassist had the 300RMS SVT with 8X10 - sounded great
if you set it way too loud. at normal volume, i'd prefer pushing a
100w fender, pushed tubes just sound a lot abetter, imho. matter of
tatse probably, and of how much you really need.
