Sound Man

maui6120w - 26 Feb 2005 09:53:45

I was interested in some of the other bands experiences with sound
men.
We have had some hard times with their arrogant asse , mostly at
some of the more popular beer joints around town.
Stuff that drive me nuts, putting crap through your monitors that he
thinks we should be hearing instead of what you want.Changing
settings in the middle of your guitar solo. And this really drives
me crazy , talking to you through the monitors in the middle of a
song. Rushing you on and off the stage when there is more than 1
band.
We have had some really cool guys, but most are just jackasses.
Any tips on dealing with these guys?

We've gotten to the point where we tell them not to mic us. They
think we are nuts, but some go along with it, others don't. I've
moved mics from my amps and really pissed some of these guys off.
With our closed backed Fender cabs I think our drummer may be the
only one who could benefit from a monitor. I'm yet to meet a sound
guy who knows what "surf music" is.

We only have one show under our belts and didn't deal with a sounds
guy. We know somebody set up the mics and turned them on but we don't
know who. And somebody asked us what our extra recording mic was for.
Might have been the sound guy.
Sound guys have a christ complex. They think they are jesus and they
know more about music than the band playing it. Question for the sound
guy. Why are you the sound guy and not in a band or working as a tech?
In the Bambi Molesters DVD you can see the sound guy kind of being an
idiot. This is what I think he is saying. Kind of muffled but I have
seen it 7 times or so. Somebody kicks a tank somehow and you hear the
sound guy say with sarcasm "great reverb. can somebody turn it down"
They turn it down wasn't sarcastic and then Lada(the bassist) gives a
confused looked and seemed bewildered at what he requested because he
didn't know what he was talking about.

Los Straitjackets tell the sound guy not to mic them and then they
have all the monitors on the stage removed.

I think I played close to a 100 gigs with sounguys, here every little
joint has a PA, and I used to be in bands with singers so...
also, there was a time when I was with my 40 watts 1x12 lil'amp,
competing against our hammond-leslie keyboarder and our friggin
stupid overspending on lend money bassist's ampeg SVT gazillion watts
8x10 prorffesional setup (the rest of the band litteraly burst out
laughing when he showed up with his 4000 euro fallic symbol, man, the
idea, we used to paly for 50 people max usually!) and I was glad they
had a pa.
anyway, nowadays, rather with then without - in most small venues,
accoustidc drums is loud enough and 4x6L6 fender amps can easily
accompany that. in my experience, usually pa does more bad then good
for the sound, both in the hall and on stage. letting the drummer
hear enough is just a matter of carefull set-up.
but, soundmen... of course, most of them are frustrated would be
metal shredders, that suffer hearing loss. I've been in all kinds of
fights with all kinds of soundpeople, sure enough. but, there are
also those who are very kind, listen carefully when you make
comments, and do their best to fulfil your demands, even if it means
changing the headliners drums setting. see PDM weblog. very friendly,
helpful, good soundman, who set up three sets of settings for three
bands, according to their gear and wishes, and enjoyed it too.
excellent sound, and he was suprised when we thanked him afterwards -
he usually just gets shit from bands.
And then there's the soundman here in TIlburg who brings his own two
vintage tape echos when a surfband is playing, because he doesn't
want to use the venues own digital processor for that sort of music.
okay, exceptions to the rule, but, some soundguys really try. and,
quite often they have to deal with a crappy PA system, not their
fault either.

In the last year we have run a crossed one good soundman! The rest have all been
assess, trying to tell us what our sound should be etc. We did one live
recording were the music was of good quality. When we listened to the CD you
here the sound man changing the EQ all over the place, even while we were
playing! We didn't notice it on stage while we played. Pissed me off.
At our last gig, the so called sound man actually came up on stage and adjusted
the amps during a song!!!! I not so politely or discreetly told him what I
would do to him if he tried that again, as the crowd boooo ed him off the stage!
LOL
We recently got to know a professional sound person (went to college for it!!
LOL ) who is interested in becoming a permanent member. But still don't know how
we will be able to handle the "house" sound person wanting to run the show. I
think the only answer is going to be to include our sound tech as part of the
contract or argeement before we book a gig?
Anyone else have any suggestions or ideas that have worked for you?

I like the idea of removing the monitors, because it provides better
sight lines, especially when there is no drum riser. However, I must
admit that the best L.S. show I have experienced was when they
opened for Reverend Horton Heat down here at 4th & B. Everything was
miced, and it sounded unreal. In a room that size, it's not a bad
thing. ~Mike
