Marty-
The "Tele" basses came out in the early 1970s as a remake
(sort of) of the original 1951 Precision Bass. The
Tele-Bass had different pickups (fat silver PAF style) and
a slightly different bridge. The "slab" body and maple
"Tele-style" neck were the same,though.
I currently play the MIJ 1951 Precision Re-Issue. It is
one of the nicest sounding, best playing basses I have ever
owned (and I have owned 6 other basses: Mosrite, Gibson,
Fender, MusicMan, among others)...I'm in love with my '51
re-issue...it has the fat "slab" body and "tele-like" neck
also...
in fact, the only bass I have ever played that I liked
better (better sound or "feel") was an original stock 1953
Precision bass that still had the bridge cover and mute on
it. An old ex-rock-a-billy/ surf guy (a Doctor now) bought
it BRAND NEW in 1955...he played it during his high school
and college days, and then shelved (with the original 1955
Tweed Bassman Amp!) it in the closet. He pulled them out,
and let me play on it for a while...nice bass...real nice!
anyway...there's my 2 nickels worth
