Marty,
your recipe is here:
I bet it goes down great with a flat-dog sidedish ;-)
btw, you forgot picks and trempicking techniques in you list of
returning subjects.
I for one do enjoy the returning debates every now and then, I also
think that though the subjects might be repetitive, the content of
debates isn't --- there is some sort of development every time a
subject returns. I keep reading them and keep learning from them.
and A LOT of space here is dedicated to show and album reviews and
talk about new bands - which is really great too.
I like the yahoo groups more then the forum design - the main reason
being that I like the unorganized nature of it, which makes me end up
reading posts I enjoy but otherwise never would have read. It's the
difference between all hanging at the bar with a beer getting to know
eachother, barfly style, as opossed to brittish pub with deviders
between every table where you never get to know anyone sorta thing.
And the yahoo-group format defintly carries a vintage vibe !
It would be nice though, if every now en then people would change the
subject of there post, if it floats away from the original subject...

Thanks for the recipe, WR.
I don't know, if the repeated debates ever offer anything new, it's miniscule.
Yeah, the alternative to tank reverb question usually has a new pedal to
introduce but for the most part we just beat the same horse into a finer pulp. I
was gonna say it's bad to have these discussions repeated so often because folks
will get board and leave. But the list keeps growing so I can't say that.
Tab or no tab for beginners is another one I forgot to include in the short
list.
That's a good point about the unorganized nature of the yahoo groups. Discussion
is more fun when it's informal and not carefully categorized.
I now present a digest of these common discussions:
1. Jazz-Jag bridges. Solutions discussed will be the Mustang bridge replacement,
the buzzstop, grinding wider slots.
2. Fender reverb tanks. Folks will ask for a decent floor pedal alternative.
Many will be suggested but they will be rejected by others as not giving the
proper depth of reverb or spit sound. For those who have RI tanks, modifications
in tubes, caps, and springs will be discussed. Marty will invariably poo-poo all
such modifications.
3. Pick up changes. Members will tell about the crap stock pick-ups they
replaced with far superior Seymours or Mighty Mites or...
4. Flatwound strings. D'Addario (pronounced Da-dar-ee-oh) chromes will be
suggested and then someone will say they suck and Pyramids are the ones to have.
Another brand also gets suggested but I forgot what it was. Optimum string will
also be discussed.
5. Trempicking techniques. Various picks will be recommended from medium to
heavy, mostly flatpicks with one nitwit recommending thumbpicks (oh wait, that's
me). Various attempts to describe the motion of the picking hand and muting
options will be attempted.
6. Tab or no tab for beginners. Many will be for it, some will be against. Both
sides will be adamant.

Ouch. Maybe I am taking this the wrong way, but this kind of stings.
If you find something boring and rehashed, just don't reply to the
topic. Clearly, people are interested in these things because they
come up a lot, and people keep replying.
We could create a FAQ for this list to help cut down with a lot of
the basic questions, but I still enjoy talking about most of them. I
don't want to take on the creation of a FAQ right now. Maybe after
the mp3 compilation is over. It would be cool if we had a "Wiki"
where everyone could contribute. (If you don't know what a Wiki is,
see the extremely cool Wikipedia site: for
just one example). Maybe I will look into that. Or someone else
could volunteer to be the editor of such a FAQ with input from the
group.
Yahoo Groups does have a database section where we could create a
FAQ that everyone could contribute to. I could start one in there
and people could add to it as they see fit for an experiment.
I was actually hoping that the songwriting thread would keep going.
Maybe it's easier to talk about strings and reverb pedals versus the
more abstract and challenging topic of songwriting.
I also greatly enjoy hearing show reports, album reviews, and what
everyone is listening too. I wish there were more of that kind of
stuff.
Still I think this list is interesting even though the same topics
come up quite frequently. If you think this list is boring, then by
all means try to liven things up by introducing another topic.
Later,
BN

Everybodies knowledge and beliefs/personal preferences change over
time. That is why these debates keep coming up. Nothing wrong with
that. It is Surf Guitar 101 but we are the TAs. There are a lot of TAs
here but sometimes the students do come around and I am sure they are
happy for our assistance.

My digest of repeated topics was intended to be humorous but sometimes I have a
stinging sense of humor (others just say I'm a smartass). A FAQ will have little
effect on reducing the repetition of topics. As you observed, we prefer to talk
about the strings and reverb pedals we use as opposed to the more mind expanding
discussions such as songwriting. Although songwriting did purdy good, it just
got beat out by another round of Jazz/Jag bridges. The list is expanding
rapidly. I don't believe we have anything to worry about with the repeated
topics.
