Bassists!

Bong Loard (the_indicators) - 18 Feb 2005 12:25:10

Stewd, whassup?
As I have often said, the bass is the coolest instrument. Yes, even
better than surf guitar. As a bass player who has turned to the dark
side (I now play surf guitar), I pine for the day when I can jump
back on bass in a surf band. Here in New Jersey, a bass player of
any sort, surf or otherwise, is hard to find. Even harder is to find
a surf guitarist in NJ though.
So here I am teaching auditionee after auditionee that the purpose
of the bass is to make people dance. Yeah, theres the whole
technical thing of establishing the harmony of the song and stuff
too. Surf, with it's easily danceable beats, is sometimes thrilling
to play live on bass. Imagine the power to make a room full of
people jump around for 2+ minute bursts. The only instrument better
is the drums, but I'm too much of a spazz to keep-up a beat.

saying no, and haven't played in a non-surf band in 3 years and
don't miss it a bit. For once in my life I am playing what I want to
hear, not what some one else wants! LOL

Bill,
I am in total agreement with you about bass and drums being cool, although, the
bassist is generally very much in the background. (people tend to watch the lead
guitarist and/or drummer, even if the bassist is playing arpeggios with his
teeth while standing on his head! lol)
I am very happy in the knowledge that it is the drummer and I who are laying
down the foundation that the guitarist plays from. Not to take anything away
from the guitar, (as you know our guitarist is my son).
It reminds me of something Keith Richards once said in an interview when asked
how he felt about Mic getting all the credit. He said, "It's my job to make Mic
look good!"
So, it's MY job to make the guitarist look good. Right? :^)
I certainly understand your frustration, it is not easy finding surf musicians
in general. Just keep twangin in there! You are in a good position of being
able to play bass or guitar because that means if you find a bassist or
guitarist you can pick up the other. Should double your odds!

Stewd, I have a 4-piece situation in the works (yes, with a bass
player). We are doing a mix of covers and originals. The rhythm
guitarist has stepped to the plate and now plays lead on some of my
originals in a way that just knocks my socks off. We are at the point
of looking for something local and low-key for our first performance.
Also, I'll be playing most of the covers a Telecaster and a non-
Fender amp. Yes, I am a iconoclast.
