okay. i am new here, but i have been playing surf guitar for a while
now. now here is my gear (which is not too surfy, since it's pretty
much the same stuff i have had when i started playing guitar, and i
started by playing punk):
Guitar: Yamaha Pacifica 112
Amp 1: Fender Princeton 112
Amp 2: Pepco Riviera 725 which is a vintage tube amp with no Reverb
and in there i just bought recently a danelectro Corned beef reverb
pedal.
the sound is nice, yes, but not what i am looking for. i don'T feel
drenched by the reverb, because i like my reverb wet. i don'T know
what gear to get to have that surf sound, and i tried many different
setups. what i tought next as a rig would be somethig like:
Guitar: Danelectro Hodad
Amp 1: Fender Twin Reverb
Add in there a Fender reverb tank, and possibly a holy grail reverb
pedal (which i am not sure at all, since it's digital reverb, and i
have a thing against that. but if i get the sound i am looking for...
that is what i tought for the danelectro pedal)
I don't know for you, but i like to hear the springs moving in the
reverb (where i say the reverb is wet). The princeton is close, but
not quite it, and not enough..
Any advice?
What do you think?
By the way, i am guitarist for this astro surf band called the
dimensionals.
Thanks for any help!

Yeah definitely get the Twin(if you can't find a Showman Amp or Dual
Showman) and the Outboard Fender unit, thats what I play through and
I'm TOTALLY satisfied with the wetness and warm tone. Their both Re-
issues as well as my Jag but I really dig the sound. -Phillip

I have a Danelectro Innuendo and I would say that it
has a nice sound, but I still prefer my Squier Strat
to it when playing surf (of the drippy heavy tremelo
picked variety). I recomend trying different guitars
and seeing which one suits you.

Played one of these the other day at a guitar store
and was surprised that I wasn't very impressed. Maybe
I just didn't have the right settings or maybe the
guitar just stank. I also played a Vox that sounded
pretty crappy, but then again it may have just been
that I didn't know how to use it and that the guitar
sucked. On the other hand I played a Vibrolux that
sounded awesome, but with a different guitar.

As for reverb.. I got a reissue and while it adds a
lot of drip, it has some negative side effects which
atleast one of my amps' built in reverb doesn't have.
The drippiness on the tank tends to be in this one
frequency range that sounds kinda lame
sometimes--kinda like what you hear in some Fathoms
recordings. Also it kind of dies out quickly
sometimes (depending on settings I suppose) and
sometimes sounds tinny (which I've noticed is only
when I play it through certain amps) while reverb on
my amps sound warmer and decay slower.
But overall I'd have to say that it kicks ass and with
the right tweaking I suppose you could get awesome
tone (especially if you have a good guitar and amp in
there too).
I've heard people on this list say that you should
never mix two reverbs, but I've noticed that it's not
really a bad thing when the two reverbs sound soo
different from each other. I say experiment.

hey there,
hey, it's the monsters from mars.. i like your band a lot. thanks for
the help.. i tried a fender vibrolux, and it's kinda duane eddyish,
it has a niced sound, but i think it's all in the reverb that my
problem is situated. i decided i'll get myself a fender reverb tank,
and mod it (I'll start by doing that and i am sure that 70% of my
problem will be solved).
We have an upcoming show in november, and i'll record it - but now we
lost the device player (which is the person that plays theremin,
keyboard and back to basic samples) and i dunno what will happen with
that. it's easy to record without him, but kinda hard playing live -
if unfeasable at all. I hope he will reconsider, cause he was good.
There is an option where the girlfriend of the drummer plays keyboard
and could replace him ,but that is hypothetical. if hypothetical is a
word. yo, we should try to get togheter some day and jam. that would
be rad.
okay anyways,. thanks for all the info, i'll look into the reverb
tank, and later into a dual showman or a twin reverb... money is not
an issue when it comes to reverb.
