speaking of reverbs...i heard 2xTapeEchoes = reverb.

tikitakitikitakitak - 12 Jul 2002 19:28:37

a year or two ago i walk in a guitar shop. and there's like a dude in
there discussing business with dudes who work in the shop.
i say: i need a REVERB.
- what kinda reverb?
i say: 60's kind...surf kind of reverb. i haven't a fender with a
spring
- back in the 60's they'd put two tape echoes one after another to
get a reverb sound.
he probably was bullshiting me, but do you think 2 short echoes/slap
type would make a reverb?
i mean there are all sorts of reverbs like plate, digital, analog,
spring and whatnot. so i suppose 2 tape echoes would make a reverb.
but i wonder what it would sound like...

The Atlantics used to do this, but you can hardly call it fender
style reverb. Bassicaly delay is when the repeats are discreet and
don't overlap, when the repeats are happening so quick that you can't
differentiate them you have reverb. Why not save up and get a real
fneder reverb? Two delay pedals will cost you more than $100 each.
Fender reverbs go for $300 on ebay...

Ummm, no, they didn't. Of course, they used a lot of echo, of the short,
staggered kind, provided by the German Echolette machines. Occasionally,
such as on War Of the Worlds or S.O.S. (Stomp on Stomp), they used two
Echolettes in series, but they also actually almost always used real
Fender Reverb units. They just didn't set them in the Astronauts-drippy
fashion.

I think I must agree with the rest of this...

UMMM, yes they did. Someone did an interview on here a while back
with the guitarist and he said that he used two echolettes in series.
This effect can be heard on the track 'The Crusher'.

Ok I just found that you put up that interview. What I don't
understand is exactly what your correcting me on since all I said
originaly was that they used two echoes. I also said that that
doesn't exactly give you reverb. Sorry for any misunderstanding.

"Why not save up and get a real

Yep, I am leaving university in 2 days. At last all the studying is
over - it's like coming out of prison having done 14 years. So I hope
to get some sort of half-decent job, and hopefully by autumn I'll get
myself an amp. Something like a RI Twin (or a Vibro-King if i see
one).
I have a Danecho pedal. I liked it loads when I got it, but not so
much anymore. Not the pedal I'd gig with. And I'm gonna start a band,
and do some gigs, so yeah I'll be sure I get some good gear if it's
happening.

Though they used two echo units together, they used them NOT to get a
reverb effect, which is what i thought you were implying (if not, sorry,
my bad), but to just get strange, spacy echos. For reverb they actually
used Fender reverb units. That's all I was saying.

Ok, no problem. The Klemt Echollette is a great unit by the way, you
can get a lot of cool tap delays with it, plus it colors the tone in
a nice way.
