What's your least thought about piece of gear? Probably the cheap
picks you throw to all the adoring Wahini's during your menacing surf
set. But the discussion on trem picking got me thinking - what if
there was a pick that improved my accuracy, speed and feel? Ladies and
gentleman, you need to check out the SX-1 Surf Rocker pick from
Birdrock Engineering out in California (). I
bought into the hype and ordered two (they are NOT cheap!). Best $5 I
ever spent. These picks make Dick Dale-style trem picking easier and
improve accuracy, just like the web site promised.
The "system" consists of these two potato-chip shaped wings you can
attach to your normal pick or onto one of Birdrock's wacky kidney
shaped picks, like the SX-1 Surf Rocker. The little wings help
position the pick in exactly the right place on your finger tips,
where it stays put - even when you aren't squeezing at all! Since you
don't have to control the pick with pressure, your arm stays relaxed.
The coolest thing was the accuracy. As a relative beginner who still
misses the occassional note, I suddenly began nailing all the songs
I've learned. I was so stoked, I dropped work and played all day.
Enough gushing - these are worth checking out. I talked to the owner,
Allen Chance, and told him that I'd pass the message on Surf 101 - let
him know I sent 'ya and maybe he'll cut you a good buddy deal. If
you're like me, I think you find its the best few bucks you've ever spent.

I've been using the F1 pick for about 6 months and I wont touch
anything else anymore. IMHO this is a significant improvement in this
otherwise lowly part of the equation. It's a little weird at first
but the rewards come very quick. I bought mine at Guitar Center.
I'm quite curious to try the SX1.
