As of late, everything I've been trying to write resembles every surf
song I've been listening to. I don't want the stuff I play to be
exact rip-off's but when I try to write differently or "outside the
box", it sounds like crap. Maybe this is like a writer's block or
something. Have any of your guys experienced this? If so, how did
you get over the hump? Anything helpful is appreciated. Thanks.
I have this exact same problem. Just the other day I
sat down and noodled around until I found something
that didn't sound quite like anything I was familiar
with that I liked...it sounded like a great bridge to
a surf song so I got kind of excited and figured out
the rhythm part...which turned out to be Am, G, F,
Em...which I guess there's nothing wrong with, but
geez...
I think some of us just aren't songwriters.

The first 5 songs I've ever really written are on our new album.
The first one I wrote I'm really proud of, the other 4...well they
suck! Many times when I sit down to "write" if something doesn't
come to me I'll just stop. If I don't stop I will continue to
noodle on something crappy that I've got, and that usually makes it
worse. The songs I'm most proud of those that pretty much came to
me fully developed and I would continue to play with it in my head
all day until I got home and had a chance to play the guitar.

hey static,
do you listen to anything besides surf ? maybe its
time to put the writing aside for a little while and
go explore some other musical genres and thoughts.
When you come back to surf, it might be an entirely
different approach for you.

To take a page from DD's theory of music...
When I write, I don't try to write a song, but tell a story of surfers
carving up huge, crashing waves, a day in the life of the, "Electric
Marlin," ala Insect Surfers or experiencing an African tribe preparing for
war or something. Dick would say he would play the rythym patterns of drums
on his guitar. The point is creativity and that is what we lack when we are
stuck in our song writing. Stretch your mind and get out of the box.
In my opinion, Dave from Slacktone is the master of melody...

Actually, I have been listening to a lot of post-rock and garage
lately. They've both kind of influenced what I've been trying to write.
