Modern Surf Band With Rickenbacker?

greenbirdbath - 06 Feb 2005 14:27:07

I know I saw a photo awhile back of a guy playing a Ric in a surf
band, but I can't recall who they were. Anyone know?

A previous incarnation of The Sub-Mersians used a Ricky bass.

The Reventlos show a Rick on a picture on their web site.
But you know, they say you can't be too rich, too thin, or have too
many guitars.

The bass player for The Infrareds uses a Rick
sometimes too. I also believe I remember the Avengers
VI, "Real Cool Hits" cover having a member holding a
Rick guitar, but they're not modern.

- As far as "playing a ric" is concerned, I don't think basses count.
(sorry). They are totally different from the guitars, that have a
very distinct crispy sound. (are they all hollowbodies)
Ric basses can have a distinct sound too, but, well, different.
Somehow a ric bass in surf doesn't surprise me as much as a ric
guitar does. but, too b honest, i know zilches about basses
- I think I saw the guitarplayer for the Magnetic IV with a ric too,
but they are not strictly surf.
- incedently, our bassist plays a 70's Ibanez ric-copy (lawsuit
worthy up till the lead (sp?) saddles), but it's got a 2 by 3
inch "F"-stamped bridge pup - he bought it like that. Personally,
i'm not really fond of how it sounds nor how it ooks, but that's just
me, I might have no taste.

I've never seen a Ric bass in an early band but
weren't they around for the latter half of the first
wave in the early '60's?

I would think a Rickenbacker guitar would work better for surf than
a Rickenbacker bass. Just because the Rick bass has such a distinct
tone. Out bassist tried one with us and it was really punchy and
ticky, didn't sound like the Fender at all. I was using a
Rickenbacker at the same time. We thought we'd be the first surf
band to both use Ricks... Anyway I thought the Rick wasn't too bad
for surf. The neck reminded me of a Mosrite, and the bridge setup
reminded me of my Jaguar. I did put a bigsby on it.

I think Rickenbacker basses were available in 1963/1964...I
know old John Entwistle was using one in the High
Numbers/Who in 1964...
Ric guitars and basses were very expensive in those days
(they still are!)...when compared to a Fender Precision,
the Ric was , like, 3 times more costly... So instead of
$500 (for a P-Bass...you'd be dropping $1500 for a Ric
bass)...
Rickenbacker and Mosrite were the "top of the line" Deluxe
back then...Fender was aimed more at the Average Joe
Paycheck. Danelectro was geared towards the "little money"
guy...and the "beginer's" market.

I think that is an interesting idea. Do you still have the Ric? Why
did you switch to the Jag?
You could actually have the whole band play Gretsch instruments,
drummer and all.

I think I should have my wife talk to "They." She told me I had too
many guitars the other night. It was a few seconds after I got the OK
from her to buy a Burns Steer on ebay....
they're so ugly they're beautiful!

I still have the Rickenbacker, I can't sell it. It was one of the
guitars my Father bought with me before he died. So I'm emotionally
linked to that one. I switched to the Jag because at the time the
guys who's tones I was after had Jags. I fell into a deep lust
which turned into a love for the Jaguar. The neck on the Rick is
too skinny for me now. Which is odd because the Jag does have the
shorter neck, but it retains more girth as you go up the neck.

John Blair played rhythm on one live when he did the medley
"Don't Worry Baby/Be My Little Baby" while Dave played the melody.
