A word about these...I have a sunburst Vista series
Jagmaster and it's great. All the Vista series
Squiers were made from the same parts and in the same
place as the Fender Japan stuff. It was all pretty
high quality. The Jagmaster had the MIJ reissue
Jaguar neck and Jazzmaster body. My opinion is that
the name "Squier" hurt the sales of these guitars. I
picked mine up in nice shape with a Seymour Duncan in
the bridge for $300 pp.
The stock pickups on them don't sound great, but
pretty decent for stock. I had thought about doing
that pull-switch/single coil mod on mine but I'm not
sure. I just like humbuckers I guess. Couldn't I
just get the mod done in the neck position? And
didn't Mosrites have humbuckers in them? I know surf
isn't traditionally played with those types of pickups
but isn't that what Mosrites were? I'm kind of nosing
around for a replacement pickup to put in the neck
position to have a bit cleaner sound for when I'm not
punking it out. Any suggestions? Maybe the SD '59?

Mosrites have single coil pickup's. At least if you are speaking of the
Ventures model.

The only guitar that has humbuckers that I would say
sounds really really good would be a Gretsch. These
have special "filtertron" humbuckers designed to sound
like single coils.
Gretsches aren't traditionally a surf guitar, but it
was the guitar that Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet
used and I'm sure other bands do too.
I was playing 6120 at Guitar Center the otherday
through a Fender Vibrolux amp. I almost wet myself.

Not a surf guitar...perhaps. But, hey, Duane Eddy played a Gretsch. And all
those other twangy Rockabilly cats can't be wrong.

Yes, the Vista series was very well made and nice and cheap. Definitely a
good value for the money. I paid $225 for the Super-Sonic from E-Bay!

Well the beauty of the push/pull pots are that you can have it both
ways...single coil or humbucker just by pulling up/pushing down on the pot.
No routing needed. Sure, you could just have it done on the neck. Its cool
to have it in both because of all the combinations you get though.

As Roland said, the Mosrites had really hot large single coils in them.

Well I don't have a lot of experience with pickups. I put a Seymour Duncan
Jazz humbucker in the neck position (I wanted one good clean pickup in
there) and I believe it was a SD JB-4 in the bridge. They both sound good
when coil tapped and I made sure I tapped different coils on each pickup so
they would hum cancel when in single coil mode and both on together. Its not
a bad little guitar for $225 + $100 or so for the pickups + 2 x $17 for the
pots. It looks pretty crazy with the reverse headstock, reverse body, and
blue sparkle finish. As I said though, the neck is a little too thin and
narrow for me. But its a fun guitar to play around the house.

One more thing on the Jagmaster. I was trying to explain what "Los
Straitjackets" was to my parents, and I pulled out my old Conan O'Brien
tapes. I had forgotten that Danny Amis played a white Jagmaster on their
December 1997 appearance (doing the Venturized version of "Sleigh Ride"). At
the time, I think they had an endorsement deal with Fender Squier. All three
guitar players had white Squiers on that show. I wonder what they really
thought of them.
BN
From what I read on the Fender Forum at one point,
they honestly endorsed them. Not to mention that
there's also a surprisingly huge following for "cheap"
guitars. I've met just as many people who say, "Never
pay more than $300 for a guitar" as people who feel
that to play anything short of a $1000 (often times
more) American made model is beneath them.
On the subject of white Jagmasters...that must be the
rarest color, because I've yet to see one. I've seen
lots of sunburst and red, a few black and sonic blue,
but not the first white one. If I could pick up a
white one I'd actually spring for a second Jagmaster.
Was that color made in short quantities or for only
one year or something?
