Marty,
I thought of a great analogy that you may be able to relate to regarding
tabs. Think of math! I know teachers generally don't care for the
student's solutions manuals. This is because it becomes too much of a
crutch. When you work with someone who is trying to learn and you
encourage them to try on their own, with guidance, they retain the
information better and have more confidence. In the future, the problem
becomes less frustrating.
Since I don't know about tabs, I cannot make too much of an informed
comment, but I would assume that learning songs on one's own, or with
some guidance, would create more confidence, self-reliance, and the
ability to retain information (the song) better than getting it from a
hard copy.
I thought I'd share this off list because the math analogy probably has
little relevance to other members. I can see people are sick of talking
about it, but I think it's one subject here I can relate to! I play only
by ear and am very hard-headed about learning to read music.
