Tele's in surf

Marty Tippens (mctippens) - 03 Feb 2005 20:55:16

Yeah, I guess Tele's can be "way surf" especially if ya slap a bigsby and heavy
srtings on one. To put a break in an otherwise trad-Strat-reverb surf set, I
threw on a Telecaster at surf gig a couple of weeks ago. I didn't want it to
sound like a surf guitar. I took advantage of it's country qualities and applied
them to a couple of surf songs. Mr Moto was played, but low on the reverb and
high on the b-bender country twang. Well, I liked it anyway.

I could be wrong...but, I believe I saw a "vintage" photo
of old Dave Meyers (& the Surftones)...he was playing a
Telecaster back in 62-63...also currently, the hawaiian
slide guitar guy in the Blue Hawaiians also doubles on some
songs playing reverberated rhythm guitar on his Telecaster.
And of course, I play the "Telecaster" P-Bass (1951 RI CIJ
Precision Bass)...
man, Telecasters can be WAY surf!
Not to mention old Steve Cropper...dude... that guy could
play in my surf band any day...

there's always plenty of room for vintage "country twang"
in the surf arena...just ask Morricone and Duane Eddy and
Nokie and of course DD.

Dp, Richard, Marty
I have this telecaster still, its a custom model with a humbucker
and single original fender pick-up at the bridge. This guitar (Keith
Richards played on this model in the seventies) is from '73. I'v
played through a Fender Twin Reverd at that time, but couldn't get a
good sound with it, the single pick-up sounded to thin and the
humbucker to "muddy" for my taste.. i was seeking for a good surf
sound (and my knowledge was very little)
In the nineties I was very addicted to Star Crunches (Man...Or
astroman) Mosrite sound. Is there anybody who knows which model he
was playing?
