I got the DVD right after it came out - so two months ago. I must
confess that I have STILL only seen the first half of the DVD. And
most of you know what a huge Shadows fan I am. Two good things: it's
a very long DVD, over two hours, and the picture quality is
fantastic. However, the sound not so much. Not that it's bad per
se, but it's just not to my taste. It sounds like the drums were
close-mic-ed, and no reverb was added. I really hate that sort of a
drum sound, no 'air' or room sound at all. It drives me crazy.
Hank's tone, which always used to have an edge in the early sixties,
is so smooth that it doesn't even sound like rock'n'roll anymore
(though it is beautifully warm, which works for some songs well). In
addition, they are old guys and while 'well-mannered' always applied
to them, it's ridiculously so the case now. So, it simply hasn't
appealed to me that much.
However, I must say that the version of "The Savage" on the DVD is
truly fantastic, rivaling or even exceeding the original, with an
incredible solo by Hank. If only the rest of the CD was like
that...
I would recommend it for casual Shadows fans, though, since after
all, it's only $15 and it does give you a good show. But it's just
not the sixties Shads, which is my problem with it.
I just got my own copy of Guitar Player, and I must agree with the
review of the DVD. It's pretty much spot on. (BTW, anybody see a
review of that cool spring-reverb pedal in there (with a reference to
DD's "The Victor", no less??)? And Andy Summers on a vintage jag?
Wow....

I've often accused the Shads of being too well mannered. I do have
the new Final Tour Shadows DVD. If you like perfection, no chances
taken, no rough edges, extreme politness, every note in it's place,
this is for you. I like it for the great songs, great lead tone and
great drummer, even if they need to go a little easier on the starch.
