Re: [SurfGuitar101] Re: Dick Dale bio review...(more)

DP (noetical1) - 02 Feb 2005 00:32:28

ultratikikahunamandude:
Well, I don't want to provide too many spoilers to ruin it
for those who actually seek out this book...but, here's a
taste:
1. Usher talks about workin' with DD during the "Beach
Party" days.
2. Talks some about producing or working on "Secret Surfin'
Spot" and "Surfin' And-a Swingin'"
3. Talks about Dick's "Big Black Cadillac"
4. Here's a quote I like: "Dick was not that good of a
singer..."
5. He believes that Capitol Records "lost millions of
dollars when they lost Dick Dale...if they had left him
alone and let him do his own thing...then he (Dick) would
have made it big."
6. "Dick was made to sing songs that were based around
trends...he should have sang songs tailor-made for
him...Dick started trends, he didn't follow them very
well."
7. Usher does not like Jim Economides (Dick's Capitol
producer)...Usher even says that he himself was not a good
Dick Dale producer.
8. Usher says, "Dick is one of the nicest guys I've ever
met" (I many can agree with that sentiment)
9. Dick "trusted the wrong people" during his Capitol days.
10. Dick doesn't recieve the credit he deserves for really
starting the West Coast Scene. (I think good old DD shares
that honor with our good friend PJ Moto)
so there's a taste for you...
like I said, there's a ton of "DD Mythology" (and truth)
contained in "SurfBeat"...if you're a Dick-o-phile (yikes!
that sounds awful!) you need to pick up a copy.
best wishes
Dick-o-phile Dave (DP)
