Re: [SurfGuitar101] Dick Dale bio review...

DP (noetical1) - 01 Feb 2005 23:51:34

Brian:
I bought one from Ferenc...and gool old Ferenc even signed
my invoice...a nice touch.
"Surf Beat: the Dick Dale Story (from Deltone to Hightone
and beyond)" ..now that's a title! Published in 2000.
Stephen J. McFarland
It's a pretty cool book, if you are into pre-1999 "Dick
Dale Mythology." It has a real good discography, several
decent interviews of those around Dick. I particullary
enjoyed Gary Usher's comments. Some cool DD photos from
way back in the Annette Funicello days. Overall, an
interesting book.
But...here's the inevitable but...it's really not the
definitive Dick Bio. I think if you take the info in "Surf
Beat" and also the info in "Surfin' Guitars"...and take it
with a grain of salt...you get a pretty good picture of
good old DD...but, then there's all the DD stuff floating
around, magazine interviews, video, etc...
Also, good old DD has a "twenty-something" digital movie
dude hanging out at the SkyRanch working on "the Official
Dick Dale Biography/Movie/Live Show/DVD"...that was back in
2003...so I don't know the status of that project...
I think good old DD is totally worthy of a decent real
respectful biography type production...insert as many music
clips as possible, interviews...all the appropriate
DickDale-phenalia...who knows...maybe someday someone will
build the DD museum out there in the desert (29 Palms,
CA)...the least someone could do is collect his recorded
music and video footage. Good old DD needs a freakin'
archive, but I'm afraid it's all stashed out there in
SkyRanch land. Or worse yet, lost forever...
ultimately, Dick's "do it my way...or don't do it at all"
attitude seems to get in the way of any serious documentary
or archival, or truth-seeking, evidence preserving type
work. I just hope that the real "Beast" doesn't end up in
some stupid "Hard Rock Cafe"...(I hate that freakin' stupid
place...poor John Entwistle...what a shame to die at the
Hard Rock Hotel, Las Vegas...pathetic...but, that's another
story altogether...)
well, there you have it...my Groundhog-eve rant attack...
best wishes,
DP
