Slacktone 10 Year--- What A Show

reverbrob - 30 Jan 2005 19:55:56

And what a thrill. Dave and Dusty and Sam gave their usual bionic,
jaw-dropping, shake-your-head-in-disbelief performance, and Ferenc
has already posted a great account. So let me just add that it was
goose-bump city hearing two of my top fave Slacktone tunes--- Gung Ho
For Don Ho and Longboard Legato--- with the second guitar in there
just like God intended! Ditto seeing Paul Johnson give his Strat a
bluesy workout with just a hint of reverb--- a cool counterpoint to
the usual dripping-wet surf sound. What a swell time and what a
brilliant idea to have some of the top surf instro axe-slingers get
up there and throw in their contribution. A soul-satisfying night
for an appreciative crowd that packed the place to the doors.
One interesting thing I don't remember seeing before--- Sam was using
an old blackface Showman as his bass head. His tone was HUGE. These
days we're accustomed to hearing bass guitar through high-powered
zillion-watt solid state amps, but the sound from that 85-watt
Showman was awesome. Of course, Sam had a spare one right there in
the stack so maybe he was running the amp right up next to the
meltdown zone, but it sure sounded great.
