Well I'm not a Strat expert, but I've owned a few. I have right now
an American Standard and I'm not a fan of the 9.5 radius, modern
tuners, over-sized frets, and mostly the 2 point bridge. I think
the older bridges found on the vintage reissues sound more like the
older Strats heard on all the classic surf recordings. Also the
wiring is different.
That being said, it(standard strat) would make for a better
traditional surf guitar than some of the Strats Fender is making now
with Humbuckers and Texas Special pickups. Just remember so many of
those updated Strats were updated so they wouldn't sound like the
originals.
I bet you could find a CIJ Jaguar or Jazzmaster for around $500.00.
Can a Mustang be found for that? Also, that's probably not much more
than the going rate of standard Strat.
Maybe someone who's really into Strats could help you out more.
