The Euro Boys - Re: not exactly surf, but sort of...

ipongrac - 24 Jan 2005 11:43:02

I have to strongly second the recommendation for the Euro Boys "Jet
Age" CD. Mostly non-surf, but the surf tracks that are on there are
really great. There are five true surf songs:
Monkeyface (really cool!)
Point of No Return (awesome! even a nice theremin touch)
Hong Kong Cockfight (like the Ventures' doing surf)
Hava Nagilah (pretty straight cover of DD's version, with a bit more
production, like A Run For Life)
Siamese Island (breezy, midtempo summer surf, very nice)
Not quite surf, but close:
Satan's Little Helper (heavily Davie Allan influenced)
Mr. Wild Guitar (the Ventures meet Duane Eddy meet Los Straits)
Girlfriend in Tacoma (lounge exotica with dry surf guitar lead)
Grenoble Village Olympique (Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys instrumental)
The rest of it is too seventies- or lounge-influenced for my taste,
but these nine tracks make the CD well worthwhile. Especially if
you buy it on half.com from $6, which I did.
Ivan
PS I also got their second CD, but I couldn't hear any surf on that
one. Too bad...
