I did the "Jaggmaster" thing about 10 years ago. I had a 1963
Jazzmaster that started making scary creaking noises from inside the
neck. I traded that in for a 90's Japanese Jaguar reissue and a Peavey
Delta Blues Amplifier (15" speaker version.)
The Jag sounded nice and I liked the shorter scale (I have tiny bent
pinky fingers that get in the way when I play more than anything else)
but the sound was a bit too shrill to my ears. Along with my life long
passion for Surf/Instrumental Rock I was also going through a Dinosaur
Jr. phase and the stock Jag pickups fed back like crazy when fed
through my Big Muff.
I didn't want to route out the body of the guitar if I could help it
so I decided to try some of the different Seymour Duncan Jag pickups
first, I tried both the Hot and Quarter Pound ones but they still fed
back like crazy (even after a trip back to the Duncan factory for Wax
Potting) and were still missing the Jazzmaster oomph I love. Mr.
Duncan was really great about this, lots of helpful e-mails and no
charge for the wax dipping or pickup exchanges. I finally decided to
go ahead and route the guitar and go for the a wax potted set of
Vintage Jazzmaster pickups.
It doesn't sound exactly like my 1963 Jazzmaster or my brother's 1957
Jazzmaster (the 63 & 57 didn't sound exactly the same either.) It does
sound very Surfy through my Fender reverb tank and does the J.Mascis
thing well too. I like the Jag switching scheme & reinforced metal
plate for the amplifier lead better also.
I don't use the Jaggmaster very often in that I'm not in a Surf band
these days (my main guitar for my current "Rawk" band is a Burns Bison
reissue, an incredibly well made & versatile instrument by the way)
but it is a keeper and I do pull it out every once in a while when I
feel like going "surfing."
