Ivan
I have the Beat Tornados Mission to Mir, didn't know about the others.
I have all 3 Langhorns, Killer stuff, I recomend them to everybody.
I have the 2 Husky cd's and a 45,was wondering what happend to them?
I have heard of The Lunatics and El Ray, but haven't seen their
stuff for sale on the couple web sites we all buy from or the few
stores I go to to buy surf.
Which brings to my next point. I know it's hard for store and
internet stores to buy everything out there. But it'd be nice if
there was a place or site to go to, to find out about new import
releases. Even when I worked at a cd importer. I only got tidbits of
info on surf stuff. It's just not a big enough seller for some
companys to bother with. I'm a firm believer in buying cd's not
making copies or downloading. But it's hard to keep up with all the
new stuff. Time wise and financially.
Lastly I have to agree with Ivan. Although there are many bands
from the U.S. that I like alot. There is something about many Euro
bands that have a certain something to their sound that sets them
apart from the domestic surf bands. I was telling Robi form the Bitch
Boys this a while back in a e-mail. It's not that it's bad, but their
take on trad. surf is just slightly differnt. And I can tell right
away if a band is from u.s. or europe. I don't know if it's in the
water. Or if it's the musical heritage of living in europe. But it
comes out in the sound, that they are doing their take on the So. Cal.
sound. Which is great, not a bad thing at all.
Which brings me to the trad. vs. modern debate. I would never
tell someone what music to listen or not listen to. I have grown to
really love and appreciate trad. surf. I came into surf thru. Insect
Surfers/Mermen/Aqua Velvets/Man Or Astro Man. But Now I wouldn't
part with my Astronauts/ Jim Messena and the Jesters/or Atlantics
cds. At the same time, I dig the totally off the wall sounds of
the Tiki Tones Exotica meets Go Go surf sound. And Like I told Brian
recently, Daikaju while not surf, are extremely talented and very
worth checking out.I guess what I'm trying to say is I don't
understand people that say they don't like Modern or progressive
instro music. I have seen the Torquays(the band by which many in
So.Cal. and other places hold as the band to measure up to, to see
how trad. you are) probably 200 times. And I love what they do.
But if everybody sounded just like the Torquays, the surf world would
be very boring. I dig that there is all the little sub-genres of
surf/instro. Just open up your minds to good playing, even if it's
not your cup of tea. I have bought some cd's I didn't like right off.
But keep around, and re-visit them later to see if there is any
redeming value.
I'm done now, let me have all your critisims for being open minded.
