Any Untamed Youth fans aboard? I know they were probably more of
a "frat rock" band than surf but their version of The Hearse is one
of my favorites. Anyways, I've been doing some small work with
Jimmy Sutton who happens to play bass with Deke now. So I got a
little information on his gear.
He said he used his Jag on the first Youth album, Sammy's reissue
Jazzmaster on the 2nd, and his 335 on the later stuff. He had the
humbucking coils taken out of his 335 so each is only a single
coil. I guess that's how he got those great Fenderish tones from
it. He did say that the Jag that he's most associated with using in
the Youth wasn't to great of a guitar, the neck and body don't
match, and someone had medium jumbo frets installed on it.
