I think thats a grand for a pre-cbs Jazzmaster is a
fair deal, even if it is a refin. In fact, I play a
refin JM from '62 and it is the best guitar I've ever
played, wouldn't trade it for the anything. I paid
$900 for mine.
As for the trem. Are you aware of the trem switch?
It changes the bridge from a locked position that only
alows you to dive down on the notes, to a floating
bridge that you can pull up and down. All you have to
do is put the trem bar in, then push the bar down
while you flip the switch. The switch doesnt really
look like a switch though. Its that little round
gizmo between the 2 screws closest to the bridge on
the metal plate. The bridge floats when the switch is
pushed towards the bridge and locks when its pushed
away. Hope that description makes sense, but its
really not that tricky. Only problem is that the
guitar will go way out of tune when you switch back
and forth . . . at least mine does. I just leave it
on the float setting as I'm a trem junkie.
Good luck! Jazzmasters are great guitars. I played
about 15 of 'em before I bought mine. The 62'
sounded, played, and felt the best to me, but I've
come to learn that they are all different (I guess
mine isn't made of the same wood as most of the '62's,
according to the last tech to set it up for me).
