Amp wattage vs. home car/stereo wattage ratings

San Barry (san_barry) - 29 Sep 2004 13:04:02: When did home and car stereo manufacturers start using different wattage ratings
from
musical instrument amps?
Anyone know the history behind this? I assume it was for marketing purposes.
This is a
pet peeve of the father's and always gets him riled up. A cheap $200 boom box at
Best
Buy has 400 watts! How are the manufacturers rating this?
