I recently moved to a new house and noticed that on my tube amp, I get
this periodic hum that kicks in every 5 minutes or so and lasts a
couple of minutes. I never notice it with any of my sold state
amps--like an SWR Workingmans's bass amp, for example--only the tube
amp. When the hum kicks in, it increases the tendency of the amp to
feedback, and the tone starts breaking up badly. I was standing by the
window,wondering about this problem, and I heard the same kind of hum
kick in from outside my window. So I went out back and discovered my
neighbor has a jacuzi on his deck and the hum seems to be associated
with the pump kicking in periodiclly. What I don't understand is why
its getting picked up and amplified by my rig. I have the the amp
plugged into a power stabilizer/cleaner and have never had a problem
with any kind of hum before. Do you think maybe I have a tube that is
getting microphonic and going bad? Why should some other activity on
nearby power lines, even if it is a big-ass capacitor kicking in, mess
with my amp in the house next door. I'm puzzled and clueless about how
to solve this problem. Anybody run into anything like this before?
Ideas? Suggestions?
